B.C.’s Minister for Public Safety, John Les, has toured the Miworth area where homes are being moved away from the edge of the bank of the Nechako River.  He has promised there will be financial support for those who have moved their homes as in the case of two houses,  moving the homes says Les,  “was a must.” He fell short of saying how much financial relief the homeowners can expect.

Les has just wrapped up his tour of the Vanderhoof region, where residents have set up dikes to protect their community from the increased flow levels of the Nechako River.

While flows have dropped to 753cubic metres per second, the emergency situation remains in effect as does the evacuation alert.  “We need to remain vigilant in our inspection of the dike systems 24 hours each day to stay ahead of the waters” says the Emergency Operations Centre Director Joe Ukryn “All of the hard work that has been done to keep ahead of the waters needs to be maintained so we do not lose what we have worked so hard to gain.”

The Vanderhoof  area  is expected to have  water levels at the current flow rate for another 3-4 weeks,  and the Emergency Operations Centre says even though  water may be receding  in some yards, residents  must not  remove any sandbags, the message is very clear, “When the threat has passed, you will be advised.”

The heavy rains washed out my driveway, can I please get some government assistance? Oh wait, I guess I should have put a culvert there in the first place, but if I can get some money for my mistake I promise to build the driveway properly this time. And, by the way, my taxes are paid up.
