The RCMP are just now releasing details on the incident  nearly two weeks ago, which  resulted in Highway 16 near Moricetown being shut down  for a  few hours.

In a release from "E" Division Headquarters,  Sergeant Pierre Lemaitre says a 65 year old Moricetown man is  in custody following the execution of a warrant near Moricetown  early this morning.

Members of the Prince Rupert Emergency Response Team attended  the property of 65 year old Norman RENAUD at approximately 7:30 this morning with an arrest warrant for Mr. Renaud issued after the alleged assault of an RCMP member on June 26, 2007.

It is alleged that following a routine traffic check, there was an altercation between a uniformed police officer and the accused punched the officer in the head.

"The accused then threatened to kill the officer and walked back into his wooded property.  He returned a short time later to the  location of the assault armed with a firearm and upon being observed by  responding members again walked back into the woods on his property."

The release continues ...

"Given the nature of the assault and possibility of the discharge of firearms, police set up a response team to assess the risk factors.  Until a safety assessment could be done, Highway 16 was temporarily closed while the investigation continued.  After some time, and some information gathering, RCMP officers strategically took extra
precautions to avoid injury or death to all parties. The parties being the suspect, the public, and the police officers themselves. "

While Opinion250  was among the members of the media calling police for details of the incident, Lemaitre says the  information was not released  "due to safety concerns we could not discuss the nature of the investigation."

Renaud was taken into custody without incident outside  his residence by the members of the Prince Rupert Emergency Response Team  and is now facing 4 counts including: Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, Obstruction of Justice, Assault of a Police Officer and Uttering Threats.

The investigation is continuing and police are in the process of executing a search warrant on Mr. Renaud’s property.

Additional charges are possible.

Got him at 7:30am. Renaud should have went to bed early instead of staying up late watching re-runs of Rambo! Heehee!!

Now all the blahblah will start about how it was all the cops fault and the healing compost has to start all over again.

Amazing restrint shown by the RCMP in this case. Had he been only 22 years old, they probably would have shot him in the back of the head.
Probably would have if he had been in the process of trying to kill a police officer.
OH, you mean like Kevin St. Arnaud, troll?
I know you are referring to the late Mr. Ian Bush, but I think it is important to keep these issues at the forefront of our minds, when evaluating the effectiveness of our policing system.
Mr. Renaud, 65 yrs old, was probably offended by the way he was approached by what was probably a younger cop. These younger cops do not even begin to address average people with the same respect as they demand (with those big guns on their hips) from the rest of us. I have noticed that they get mighty defensive when you don't heel! or sit! immediately, when ordered to.
Perhaps with a little diplomacy on both their parts this whole scene would not have gone down. Or maybe Renaud is just a hothead.
metalman.
Metalman, glad to see you have this one quarterbacked from your layzee-boy.I would call striking a cop and then running into the bush with a rifle a little extreme.Who cares what age the cop was? Sounds to me like Renaud is a dangerous nut and he was dealt with in a proper manner. BTW, the average age of the recruits has risen over the years. You talk about young cops as if it were a new trend. Yama was right. Nothing but blah, blah, blah about how it was the cop's fault to upset Mr Renaud. Mindless generalizations as usual.
Ouch. Mindless perhaps, but generalizing?
well, o.k. maybe. Tell you what, you go back under your bridge and I'll crawl back under my Bark-a-loun-ger.
