The Prince George Coliseum has been selected as the venue for the 2007 National Women’s Team Fall Festival, running from August 31st until September 9th.
Events Prince George Sport Manager, Virginia Sprangers says the three team tournament - featuring two Canadian teams and the national team from Sweden - will bring approximately 85 athletes, coaches and officials to Prince George.
Sprangers says the Fall Festival is a significant event for the National Women’s Program, as it allows the staff to evaluate players and staff for the 2007-08 season, and sets the stage for the next three years, culminating with the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Mayor Colin Kinsley says, "I couldn’t be more happy to osee the confidence Hockey Canada has displayed in this community, by bringing this significant international event to Prince George." He adds, “We showed Hockey Canada that Prince George is capable of hosting phenomenal hockey events, such as the RBC Royal Bank Cup in May."
Prince George Minor Hockey Association Past-President and BC Female development coordinator, Dan Martin says hosting the National Women’s Team Fall Festival will not only put Prince George in the international spotlight, but will also help build the exposure for women’s hockey in Northern BC. “Our league has continued to grow over the years, and hosting an event of this calibre will inspire our current players and potential players to get involved and share in the joy of this great sport."
Sprangers says hosting this event is part of the ’Train In PG’ Campaign, aimed at attracting international athletes, teams, coaches and officials to Prince George as a place to acclimatize prior to national or international competition.
