A Prince George family says it is in the dark despite the fact their son was shot through the shoulder, the bullet then blowing off part of his left hand.
The shooting happened June 30th as the young man, Douglas Dalton Neal, and his girlfriend were driving to Takla Lake shortly after 8 p.m.
Neal and his girl friend where heading to Takla Lake to do some fishing and were towing a boat.  According to the young man, as they headed down the road, they were passed several times by another vehicle that would pull over and stop. Neal says the pair in that vehicle would then get out, relieve themselves, catch up and pass them again.
Neal and his girlfriend passed the two men as the two (one from Macleod Lake and another from the area) were standing in the ditch, relieving themselves.
Shortly thereafter, Neal says, there was an explosion in the truck.  A bullet, apparently fired from a 300 Winchester Magnum, had passed through the rear window, through Neal's left shoulder narrowly missing his neck then passed through his left hand which was on the wheel of the ‘92 crew cab, and then exploded as it blew out the windshield.
The couple pulled over, the  girlfriend dropped the boat trailer, then  got in behind the wheel and drove her wounded boyfriend to the hospital in Fort St. James where he received emergency treatment before being sent to Prince George Regional Hospital.
Neal’s mother Moira says, “We don’t know what’s happening. We know that my 25 year old son  has lost his middle finger and his left palm is now only a fraction of what it was, we are thankful that the bullet missed his neck which was only about eight inches away from where  the bullet smashed thorough the cab.”
Moira says there has been very little information “We don’t know if the two men have been charged, hearsay says they were charged with unsafe use of a firearm, but we don’t know. We don’t even know if we are supposed to lay charges or who is doing what.”
The family says they were even wondering whether the vehicle was covered by ICBC.
According to an ICBC spokesman, the answer to that question is, yes.  The damage will be covered by ICBC under a comprehensive claim.
In the meantime, young Douglas Dalton Neal  is at home recovering from the ordeal.
The incident was originally investigated by the RCMP in Takla Landing, and then turned over to the RCMP in Ft St James and then the Serious Crime Unit was called in from Prince George. The two men involved in the incident are not in custody.

The charge should be attempted murder. Naturally they won't get any jail time but the rest of us will be forced to turn in our guns now.
It's a good thing that registry is making things safer for us.
IMO,the RCMP will use the charge most likely to get a conviction.
That's how the system seems to work.Take the easy route.
It doesn't matter that it SHOULD be attempted murder,I seriously doubt these guy's will ever spend much time in jail.
But that poor kid who got shot will still be buggered and in pain for the rest of his life and for what?
A stupid, pointless crime by a couple of drunks is my guess, and they SHOULD go away for a long, long, time.
Who were they?
Why were they there?
Why were they carrying a gun at this time of year?
What were they hunting?
And most of all,why are they not being held in jail?

Personally I think public whipping should be brough back for crimes like this. 40 lashes each in front of the courthouse would be appropriate I think.

As a gun owner stories like this make my skin crawl. There's just no excuse for an incident like this, and I hope the judge throws the book at them.
Police probably just gave them all speeding tickets, and called for more money to be put in the gun registry.
Did they get their boat back? or did the shooters gain some new possesions?
I too am concerned that incidents like this add fuel to the fires of the factions that would see us disarmed. What a thoughtless, uncaring act though, and it must have been scary for the young couple. I can only imagine their apprehension at having to travel back towards the suspects.
Hope the guilty parties are sent to jail for a few years.
metalman.
Looks like they were all partying togeather. One person is charged with dangerous use of a firearm. Seems to me that they we all fooling around with guns and alcohol. lucky no one else was hurt.
I think the young man konws what had happened and he just doesn't want his mommy to know.
It is starting to sound that way.....something a bit odd here!
Can't comment on the father/son aspect of your statement, but the young man was driving only.
Yes one does recall when someone got into Kaka over what you describe, however one learns from mistakes made and gets on with life.
"As well, a civil action should be pursued as well, regardless if they were all friends. "

True on the surface, but what is the reality of any settlement being paid ?

ICBC would deny any claim against his third party liability insurance as he was in breach of conditions.

That leaves the brainy wonder to pay out of his own pocket, unless he found an insurance company that likes to underwrite morons for drunken recklessness.

I imagine he has a high paying position too, like sign post or speed bump, with the level of responsibility he shows.
A settlement would depend on the injury and the level of future disability to the victim.

ICBC may pay for the damage from the bullet to the young man's truck as the parties were in separate vehicles. ALso, I doubt one was trying to shoot at the other....that's why they call it an accident, however the offending party is still culpable. Still a viable charge of dangerous/careless use of a firearm.
