Dr. Lorna Medd,  the Medical Health Officer for Northern Health, is leaving the region to take on new work on Vancouver Island.

”This has been such a hard decision, While I am looking forward to the next steps in my work, I have felt very much at home in Prince George and Northern BC over the past 10 years. I’m grateful for all the challenges and inspiration that have come from many wonderful Northern BC people,” said Dr. Medd.

At the end of August, she will be moving to Vancouver Island, where she’ll be involved in broader environmental issues including climate change.

Dr. Medd moved to Northern BC in 1996 after a career in family medicine and public health. She has been the medical health officer for the Northern Interior for the past several years, and was NH’s chief medical health officer from 2002 to 2004.

Dr. David Bowering, NH chief medical health officer says Dr. Medd will be missed "Dr. Medd’s work has provided enormous benefits for Northern British Columbians.  She’s led initiatives to improve air quality, reduce smoking rates and strengthen community food security through grass roots networks. She is also a committed ally for First Nations health initiatives.  We’re sorry to hear of Dr. Medd’s decision, but we appreciate and acknowledge her lasting contributions to public health in Northern British Columbia.”

NH’s recruitment process is getting underway shortly. The Executive Council of British Columbia (the provincial cabinet) oversees the appointment of medical health officers, on the advice of a health region’s board.

She's probably going to a much cleaner and less polluted place knowing the the air in pg will never be healthy.
It's not just PG with bad air. Most of the province is the same.
The list of high-profile professionals leaving the city in the last few years is starting to get a little long.
I don't know that Vancouver Island has cleaner air. At any given moment it seems that half the population is driving up or down the Island Highway, belching carbon dioxide and unburnt gas and diesel fumes (perhaps slightly exaggerated).

We are being told over and over again that senior employees are getting older and closer to retirement. Why be surprised when they move in that direction. The provincial government needs to put some more money into training replacements now, not after they are gone. Think of all the other senior physicians in PG. Who will replace them as they retir over the next 10 years or so?
Even a $240,000.00 per year job cant keep them down on the farm. First chance they get they go.
As the song says, "Another one bites the dust". But in this case, she is gonna bite fresher air. Ha ha ha
Yippy, I'm glad she is leaving! We had our run-in with her and she is not a person to let facts stand in her way. For Meads the ends justified the means, always.

Moving south is the perfect location for telling us how to live regarding the climate change agenda. Moving to a place like Ft Nelson would not be a great location to start riding a bike or turning down the heat. The new job certainly suits Meads completely.
