The "Golden Raven" is the official "cultural brand" for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.

This is the icon that will be used to promote cultural tourism within the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.  It has simplicity, it is easily recognized, transfers well to all forms of media, and can be  made into plush toys.

Why a Raven? It is a social animal, native to the area and does not migrate.

Why gold?  It links to  gold rush history of the region.

Watch for the Golden Raven to appear on marketing materials. The marketing plan is to be developed and presented  for approval this fall.

The Raven is "moving forward" says Concept Design's Dan Rogers, "But it is looking back to its past." So it is symbollic that it is proud of its past but is moving forward.

And no first nations influences???
However...it does root in the garbage and craps all over the place leaving a big mess wherever it goes.
It also kills and destroys eggs and young birds while they are still in the nest.
It starts screaming at daylight and is just generally annoying!
Great choice!
Looks like someone spilled some mustard sauce on the rug.

;-)
What sort of circle jerk committee came up with the concept of "cultural tourism"?
I don't think the "Raven" is looking over his shoulder at his past. I think in this day and age, the good ol' Raven is watching his back. He would have to these days with greedy banks and doltish politicians out to ruin everything connected to life.
One partakes in cultural tourism when one:
• Goes to Ireland and visits a pub or two to drink local beer and participates in the local culture of spending a few hours with friends socializing.
• Takes a trip on the Rhine to look at old castles.
• Goes to Paris and visits Le Louvre
• Visits the Cathedral in Milan, Italy.
• Explores the fishing villages of the Greek Islands
• Attends the globe theatre in Britain
• Visits the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
• Visits Prince George to attend a hockey game
• Visits New Orleans to participate in the Mardi Gras
• Visits Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro.
• Visits Quebec City, and its walled quarters

Definition of cultural tourism?

Cultural tourism is based on the mosaic of places, traditions, art forms, celebrations and experiences that portray a nation and its people.

Cultural tourism is the oldest form of tourism which used to be practiced only by the idle rich. Now it is practiced by the idle rich, idle middle class and even idle poor.

;-)

I think the "circle jerk committee" were some of the ancient Greeks in Athens who used to visit the then already ancient Minoa. :-)
So does this bird have any connection to the dead one that is hung up on a bunch of strings just past city hall on Queensway. I sure had to stare at that one. What weirdo hung a bird up like that? I thought it would rot off by now. Stuff like that should be taken down by the SPCA because sick stuff just encourages people to go and string up cats or torture other animals.

I once saw a flock of crow come over the horizon from the East over Cranbrook Hill at sunrise heading into town so huge that it filled up the whole sky for like 10 minutes. I had to pinch myself to make sure it was real. It was like every crow in 500 miles came to town for a convention....
"It was like every crow in 500 miles came to town for a convention...."

It says they are social animals, so it could very well have been a pilots' convention.

;-)
So maybe we should nail dead scumbags to every fifth post on the way into town ???

Okay, okay... I jest.... we couldn't possibly do that....... but what a comforting thought to those who have been victims of crime....

Blessings
Cultural tourism in PG:
- Getting accosted by chugs downtown
- jostling with hillbillies at Walmart
DTS ...

you catch on fast ... there is hope yet...

The Raven is the transformer, trickster for being a somewhat mischievous glutton. He was always out to please himself and have a good time...thats what the native people say about the Raven, sounds like our Government!
jonnypg is right on. The dangers of people selecting symbols without thorough research.

"Whereas ravens appear almost exclusively as signatory animals for deities in Europe, in the shamanic cultures of aboriginal North American tribes Raven appears as deity himself."

"From a dichotomy of cultures, we reach a dichotomy of characterisation, for Raven in America, particularly the Northwest coast region, is both demiurge and trickster, both hero and villain, and often at one and the same time."

"Animals can take on human form without a second thought (although Raven is the greatest shapeshifter of them all, being able to change into anyone and anything to get what he wants)"

"Both Coyote and Raven are driven by greed: Raven's for food, Coyote's for more carnal pleasures. A Tlingit storyteller says that "Raven never got full because he had eaten the black spots off his own toes. He learned about this after having inquired everywhere for some way of bringing such a state about. Then he wandered through all the world in search of things to eat." 3 The journeys of Raven form the basis of most of the myths in the region, and he travels around meeting animals of all descriptions and usually succeeds in contests of wit with them, either destroying and eating them or driving them off and securing their food."

Great choice to represent the cultural heritage of the north.
