 Solicitor General John Les  announces IMPACT is coming to Prince George

It is no secret that while auto theft crime has dropped in the lower mainland, the newest stats from ICBC show it has climbed 17% in Prince George, and  an increase of 88% in thefts from vehicles. (see previous story)

This  morning, Solicitor General John Less was in Prince George to  announce  IMPACT is coming to Prince George, "We think it is needed now  IMPACT has moved into town and they are here on a mission, if you are  an auto thief and like to steal cars, they are going to make your life miserable."
IMPACT brings with it bait vehicles including cars, trucks, all terrain vehicles and personal watercraft. There are undercover officers,   and police dogs which Solicitor General John Les says " Enjoy helping us take a bite out of crime."
There is a helicopter,  and automatic license plate recognition which can run 600 license plates in a flash.
Les says there will be lots of cameras taking  photos " If you are an auto thief, we will have the best  evidence possible, namely your mug shot on a video and the  Judges find that pretty compelling evidence."
On an average day in B.C. there are nearly 200 vehicle crimes a day at an annual cost of $130 million dollars.
Here are the top ten items stolen from vehicles:
  1. Stereo equipment - CD players, amps, speakers,  subwoofers
  2. CD’s
  3. Laptop computers
  4. Coins - parking change
  5. Registration papers
  6. Garage door openers
  7. Cell phones, portable DVD and MP3 players
  8. Work tools
  9. Tires and wheels
  10. Air bags

Here is the top one item that results in most of all these thefts. Repeat offenders who steal cars and are released almost right Away back into parking lots to do it again. If you can't keep them in jail, put them on a bus to somewhere else in this country. And by doing that we will see if they have the wherewithal to come back here. But then again, someone needs a taxpayer funded holiday, just steal a car and get caught. D'oh! Seems we can't win.
How about a little prevention by the vehicle owner. I wonder why the theft of imorts is not shown on this survey?
