The RCMP believe that a woman jogger was mauled to death this weekend by a young black bear near Panorama Mountain Village resort, in the Panorama Mountain Bike Park 19 kilometers (11 miles) west of Invermere.

The victim’s name has not been released.

The woman  went missing yesterday and when a police officer arrived on the scene where the body was discovered today, a black bear  weighing about 50 Kilograms (120lbs) was nearby.

The officer shot the bear and police are now conducting tests to  determine if they got the  right bear.

No other details are immediately available.

When I find Black bears around my house it does take long to decide what to do. If they are on the run to someplace else, they get to live.

The ones that saunter around and stare at you, or go sneaking around, get pasted right away.
Kapow! It may not be fair, but you are right Yamadoo. We may haved moved into their space, but that is inevitable. When they appear to be hanging around, it is only for one reason, and that is not for entertainment or interest, but for food! If we or our children get in their way, they take action, and we usually lose. If they get in our way, we (should) take action, and they lose. Such is life.
metalman.
Do we really have to hype it up and justify it? We encroach on them. Period. So be it. If we humans cannot use our intelligence to at least acknowledge the dangers of hiking through a mountaineous area and accept responsibility for the consequences of such behaviour, then we are in sad sad shape. It is inevitable that bear maulings will occur. It is inevitable that when they do, a bear will die. When an animal is hungry, it will search for food. Where it finds food, it eats. When a wild animal feels the need to protect it's young, it will. Such is instinct. No need to justify the mistaken or bad judgement of the hiker, no need to glorify the death of the bear. BOTH ARE SAD.
Better sad than dead.
absolutely, no arguement from me YamaDoo..in this case, both dead, double sad.
