The  Canadian Red Cross and Wal-Mart are  going to work together for the balance of this month to try and raise a million dollars for  the Canadian Red Cross Disaster Preparedness and response funds.

The national campaign will kick off at the Prince George Wal-Mart on the 9th and carry through  to the 2nd of September.

“The money raised during this campaign will ensure that when major disasters strike in Northern BC or the Yukon, Red Cross volunteers and staff will be there immediately, working alongside governments and other organizations to meet the urgent day-to-day basic needs of those affected,” said Chris Bone, Regional Director of the Canadian Red Cross.

Customers  at the check-out will be asked if they would like to make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross , that  donation will be added to the bill.  Customers can also have  their name written on a Red Cross card that will be posted on the wall.

The Red Cross was very active this past spring in the Terrace  region following the Skeena river  Flooding.  The organization has also played a  role in assisting those displaced during the  wildfires of 2003.

If you are not able to  go to the store, but would like to make a donation, that can be done online at :

Does Walmart actually match their customer's contributions or do they just take the credit for the money raised?
There's no mention of it in the article so I'm assuming that Walmart is just providing the venue/means to collect contributions.
