Bridge Design Nearing Completion

The project to twin the Simon Fraser bridge will soon have a design.

Rob Duffus, Ministry of Transportation spokesman says the design for the project is 90% complete.  That would put the project a little behind schedule as  it had been  thought the design would have been completed by the end of July and  the project would then  go to tender for the construction of the  bridge.

The twinning project was originally pegged at a cost of $32.5 million, but the lowest bid for the job came in $15 million over the budget.  It was then decided the project would be split, with the design portion presented first then the project would be opened for bids.  The idea is that the construction portion would bring more competition and a lower price, once the design had been complete.

Seeking a lower price for such a heavily used bridge makes me shudder.
As long as it meets all the proper established standards the government has an obligation to the taxpayers to avoid paying overinflated costs no matter where it happens.
I'm still wondering about the rest of the so-called "Cariboo Connector". Now work is being done this year on any 4-laning projects. I guess they'll actually get back to work when an election comes near again.
Sorry - NO work is being done
It's a fifty year project, so 2% will get done (maybe) every year. For far too many years nothing got done at all, so 2% is quite an improvement!

Cheers!
"2% is quite an improvement"

The greatest 2% improvement would be a Quesnel bypass. The second greatest a Williams Lake bypass.
The third greatest would be a Hixon bypass/overpass, in fact it may be a candidate for first priority, in my book!
How 'bout a P.G. bypass?
All them pesky walmart camping motorhomes can just go right on by.

I figure the bridge design should be ready just before the next provincial election. Vote Lieberal again and we'll build you a brand new bridge and another 200 feet of the Cariboo Con.
Vote NDP and what will you get?
