Train Crash Human Error

The CN train collision on the east side of the Fraser River in Prince George on the weekend, was the result of human error.

That much CN Spokesperson Kelli Svendsen can say, however, she can neither confirm nor deny that the manager involved has been relieved of duties. “We do not discuss individual discipline or consequences of discipline of individual employees.”

While Svendsen will only say the collision was the result of employee error, beyond that, the Transportation Safety Board is in charge of the investigation.

Saturday morning, two CN trains collided on the tracks on the east side of the Fraser River, directly across from Paddle Wheel Park.   The trains were carrying lumber and fuel.  The resulting fire sent a column of smoke into the Air that could be seen for miles.  While some fuel may have leaked, the Ministry of the Environment is satisfied it burned off.  Booms were set up to contain any spill, but the Ministry officials say  there had been no evidence of  any spill.

There were no injuries in the  collision

I would like to say that I think CN is getting away with too much here. This is a repeat offender in terms of accidents. This company is unfortunately becoming the poster board for " large conglomerate corporation" that because of political bed sharing can do no wrong. I find it strange that Transport Canada, will take some 2 years to complete an investigation and then fine CN a couple of million dollars for wiping out an entire years worth of fish stocks in the river by Squamish. A couple of million bucks to CN is a days pay. and 2 years for the result of the investigation is ridiculous. If the average driver was fined a days pay and was given 2 years to be brought to justice there would be more accidents than drivers on the roads. We as Canadians are policed, taxed and fined regualarly for our irresponsible behaviour.
I would like to see quicker response by Transport Canada, and much heftier fines if not suspensions for CN and for companies like CN.
CN is the largest railway in Canada and North America, and it should be setting the example of how to run a large profitable railway. Instead it shows us how to get away with ruining the enviroment. I would like to see CN reduced to limited allowable use of the railway lines until they can have an accident free month or something, because as it stands now, CN seemingly do not know how to keep the trains on the tracks, nor do they seem to care at what damage to our enviroment they cause. In the last 4 months there have been 4 accidents by CN in BC alone. This is unacceptable. A responsible company would be more concerned and would be looking for ways to fix things, not waiting for a slap on the wrist by Transport Canada to motivate change.
Government investigators, and not CN, should determine the cause of the accident. CN is trying to lay the blame on one individual in order to avoid corporate responsibility.
I for one would like to thank CN Rail for providing an excellent show on the weekend. Having found out that no-one was injured, it was great watching the fireballs, and the airshow was outstanding. We had great seats too...what a great place for a train wreck! Thank you to CN Rail for continuing to contribute to our community!
There is no doubt that 2 years to complete any investigation is a disgrace!
But unforunately,it happens all the time. I don't put much stock in the reasons we are given for it happening either.
Take a look at some of the time delays for such things a coroners inquests etc.
5 to 8 years or more in some sensitive cases?
There is also little doubt that corporations like CN in particular, are in bed with the government and the longer an investigation takes, the more people calm down and forget.
The result is a lesser penalty.
This is a well known fact in law circles.
CN is NOT god but, they do have far to much power and political influence in Canada.
Both the federal and provincial governments need to be held accountable for that.
The entire CN/B.C.Rail issue is a disgrace and needs to be investigated by an independant board.
Notice the delays and legal wrangling in the Vasi/Kirk case?
But we know damn well that will not happen anytime soon.
There would be far too many dirty faces in some political circles when it was over to ever allow it to happen.
You bet, human error, some poor sap following his bosses orders, now he gets it in the rear and we get to wait for the big one...
Check out the front page of the Citizen today. Nice picture from David Mah showing burning fuel in and on our Fraser river. Pretty hard to say otherwise. Chester
