Prince George is setting some  targets for greenhouse gas emissions as it moves forward with  the Partners in Climate Protection Plan.

The   City has now reached the third in five milestones as identified in the Partners in Clinate Protection Plan.  The first two  (creating a greenhouse  gas emissions inventory and forecast,  and setting a reduction target)  were ready, but the reduction targets were on hold until this third milestone,  the development of a local action plan, had been completed.  The target reductions would see greenhouse gas emissions reduced by the City  by 10% by 2012.  The reductions are based on  levels recorded in 2002.  There is a 2%  reduction target for the community at large.

The next step will be the implementation of the action plan , and the final step will  be to measure the progress and report the results.

While  the  City’s Environmental Manager, Mark Fercho says  departments have  already  included  initiatives in the budgets for this year so there is no extra cost o for 2007, Council needed to be aware there will be  costs associated with  implementing the plan in the 5 years left on the  emission reduction timeline.

According to Fercho,  the costs will  total  at least $825 thousand dollars as there are some  initiatives where the costs have yet to be determined., but Fercho says the benefits outweigh the expense.   The benefits include improved air quality,  increased lifespan of the infrastructure,  reduced costs to the City  for  electricity , natural gas and fuel consumption.

The plan  outlines 20 initiatives  designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:

  1.  Implement Phase 1 of the Community Energy System (Municipal Buildings)
  2. Evaluate and Implement Energy Reduction Opportunities for Civic Buildings
  3. Build all new municipal buildings to High Energy Efficient Standards
  4. Implement a Consolidated Fleet Energy Reduction Plan
  5. Continue to evaluate and implement bio-based fuels
  6. Incorporate Energy Conservation and GHG reduction in Utility Operations.
  7. Advance Energy Efficiency through municipal practices and “in-reach”
  8. Promote Energy Efficiency in Purchasing DecisionsCommunity Initiatives
  9. Endorse the BC Energy Efficient Buildings Plan Targets
  10. Encourage Energy Efficiency in the Residential Buildings
  11. Encourage Energy Conservation in the Commercial,Institutional, and Light Industrial Sectors
  12. Support Industry to Reduce Energy Consumption and GHG Emissions
  13. Promote Transportation Alternatives
  14. Advance the Transit Plan Objectives
  15. Reduce Unnecessary Fuel Consumption in the Community
  16. Encourage Use Smart Growth Principles to Guide Land Use Planning
  17. Incorporate Energy Considerations into Planning Documents
  18. Implement Phase 2 of the Community Energy System
  19. Encourage Alternate Energy Supply Systems
  20. Develop and Implement a Stakeholder Outreach Campaign

Prince George is one of 149 communities in the country taking part in this program.

21. Remove Sulphur dioxide from our air shed.
Getting rid of all the thirteen car line ups at each of the many drive thrus in this down oughta cut down some pollutants. How much I don't know. Better ask Mr. Yamaha. Make them folk park, shut off their engines, get off their fat asses and join the line ups inside. Could work. Late and on the run? Leave earlier, ninnies.
Greenhouse gases, come one folks it is a scam. This chasing greenhouse gas is only taking money away from other real envirmental concerns. Gore, Susuki and others are making big money off this scam. Antartica and Greenland are getting colder not warmer. The only threat Polar Bears are under is Greenland where there is unrestricted hunting. Parts of Australia have had some of the coldest weather in a couple of decades.

Yes there is global warming because we are still warming up from the last ice age. The average rate of rise in temperature has not changed for millennia. There is no proof of a recent guick rise.

Do some simple searches on the internet, lots of information. Ask yourself why there is no debate on so called greenhouse gas co2 before we spend millions billions and trillons for nothing. There is no debate because there is hudge money to be made chasing co2. Al Gore will not debate, why is that. In 2006 his energy bill for his mansion in Nashville was $30.000!

People do lots of research before buying a house or car. Then why do they take an actor or ex-politicians word at face value? Beats me.
