North Nechako Residents Want Air Quality Action and a New Noise Bylaw
By 250 News
The City of Prince George has been advised that Pittman Asphalt, will be conducting operations overnight in order to work on the paving contract secured with the Provincial Ministry of Transportation. That contract involves paving from Highway 16 and 97 to Victoria , then north on Victoria to First Avenue.
The Residents of North Nechako have some issues with the overnight plan. In a media release issued this evening, the residents say they understand the need for the work to be done overnight, they also appreciate the steps being taken to mitigate the expected noise problems that will occur during the production of asphalt. The residents do however have other concerns.
"We have issues with the city’s inability to demand that Pittman Asphalt live up to the promises they made when they were granted the right to situate in our neighbourhood. These include berming around the asphalt plant to reduce industrial noise and using Natural gas instead of used oil to reduce pollution. "
The City is still holding more than $40 thousand dollars in securities for that work to be done. The residents are concerned that with the overnight work in September, the morning temperatures are often cool. "September is usually a month of cold mornings and air inversions so residents fear they will experience unhealthy air during this paving process. We hope that the Ministry of Environment will test the air for VOC and PAH. "
