The work to transform Community FOundation Park at 7th and Dominion Street in Prince George has begun. The bowl fountain that was the centre of the monument has already been removed, and work had begun to remove the east wall.
The plan calls for the west wall, the one with the mural, to remain standing. While this initial work will see new paving stones installed and the area cleaned up, the eventual look will be what you see at right, complete with new fountain, new plants, and an open, inviting space.
In a report to Prince George City Council in March of this year, Manager of Parks, Bill Gaal noted the problems the park and the fountain faced over the years. He referred to a letter written back in 1980 by former Councillor Carrie Jane Gray "Unfortunately there were a great number of citizens with no imagination who got their kicks from thowing soap flakes in the pool, breaking the reflective lights and wee-weeing in the pool."
In more recent years, the curved walls have acted as screening for all sorts of unsavoury behaviour. The current work will cost between $20 -$30 thousand dollars, but has already been budgeted for. The total bill for changing the park from what it was to what is envisioned is just under half a million.
