Presentation Time Cut Back for Submissions to Boundaries Commission

Tomorrow, the BC Electoral Boundaries Commission will have  a public consultation session in Prince George.  This is the first of its sessions  in the province to gather information  on the  proposed  changes to the electoral boundaries.

SInce releasing its  preliminary report  on Aagust 15th, there has been plenty of reaction in the north, which the  BCEBC says should have  one less MLA.  That reduction would directly impact Prince George.

Not only is there a rally planned  to take place in the Civic Centre Square next door to where the public hearings will be held, but  it would be safe to say enough people want to speak out that  the Commission has had to peel back  the  normal presentation time.

The hearing is supposed tobe three hours long from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m at the Coast Inn of the North in Prince George.  Presenters  had been developing their presentations with the understanding they would each have 10 minutes to speak.  That would suggest  the Commission  expected no more than 18 presentations.   Now the Commission has  issued  a notice to all who want to  make a presentation that their time segment has been cut in half.  So, at 5 minutes each, the Commission could be expecting  up to 36 presentations.

The  current MLA’s  are not expected to make a presentation at this hearing as special dates  and locations have been set aside to hear from all MLA’s and the political parties.

Perhaps they need to schedule an additional presentation time. They can't imagine that an issue as important as this wouldn't attract a great number of thoughtful presentations. The electoral boundary commission should also consider some means of providing written submissions for those unable to attend in person.
The pamphlet I received in the mail from the Electoral Reform has lots of pretty pictures, based I suppose on what is important to BC, and how people think of BC.

I'd like to see BC represented the same way in the elected membership. There was 20 pictures in the pamphlet of which 6 are urban, 4 are the ocean and 10 are of the rest of the province.

Seems the electoral reform people should look at their own pamphlet.

Either that or stop taking pictures of the rest of the province if this process is just about the numbers of people in the delta anthill. Why not put in pictures of Switzerland instead?

An interesting way of further cutting down the representation of the North. No reason why they couldn't have extended the day or start earlier in the day. Yep 3 hours of input to decide the fate of the North, yep that sounds just about right, especially when they have already made up their minds.
BCEBC says PG is the first of it's sessions in the province. Wow, we should be so honoured.

So, make your voice count, be heard and be visible. They wouldn't be coming here if they weren't interested in actually hearing our concerns. So, speak up folks. Chester
