Labour Minister Mike De Jong will meet with both sides in the teachers dispute on Monday in Victoria in a last ditch effort to try and avert a strike by teachers across the province.
De Jong says he isn’t optimistic that a settlement can be reached and an agreement can be made without a strike.
Education Minister Shirley Bond says that the raises requested by the teachers would add another $700 million to the province's costs and she is not prepared to accept that.
Even the NDP have been saying that a 35% increase in wages over a three year period is “unreasonable”.
BC’s 42,000 teachers earn between $35,000 and $66,000 dollars a year.
BC Teachers Federation President Jinny Sims says the 35% figure is highly inflated. According to the teachers, the province has been offering a zero per cent increase.
