Prince George, B.C. - Vernon Kyle Wilson has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for 13 years for the death of Candace Marie Kalmokoff.
Wilson had admitted to killing the College of New Caledonia student in her Prince George apartment on the eve of New Years 2006. He says they were passionately kissing, she withdrew and refused any further advances. That was when Wilson threw her on the bed, strangled her to death then had sex with her dead body.
He then moved her body to an alley behind a 15th Avenue real estate business and tried to burn it. Her body was discovered New Years Day.
The Defence says Wilson had been caught in a life of watching violent pornography but he is an intelligent young man who can be rehabilitated. The Defence wanted a sentence with no parole for ten years.
The Crown says the act was violent, and is further aggravated by the fact he caused an indignity to her body by having sex with the dead woman. The Crown wanted no parole eligibility for 15 to 20 years.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Eric Chamberlist said Wilson had a Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde type of personality,. The Judge said while he beleives Wilson is intelligent, he thinks he portrays being a caring person, while living another life filled with substance abuse and addiction to pornograhy.
The Judge also pointed to the idignity to Kalmokoff’s body as being a key point in why the sentence is what it is, "While you may have remorse now for what you have done, by carrying out the final indiginity to her body, you showed that at that time, you had no empathy or remorse for what you had done. "
In addition to the time in prison, Wilson is banned from owning a firearm for 10 years, must supply DNA samples and has to register with the sex offenders registry.
