Prince George, B.C.  - College Heights Secondary  is getting a  new music room, new multi purpose room  and an expanded library.  In total, it will be just over 5 million dollars worth of construction.

The  dollars for the  work have been  raised by School District 57 through  the sale of  out of commission school properties, and  local capital funds.

The expansion and renovations have been on the  "to - do" list for the School District for 18 years

The proposed addition (825m²) and renovated space will be  ready in time for the September 2008 school year,  construction will start  as soon as the tendering process  has been completed.

"The music and multi-purpose rooms will be an important addition to College Heights," said Lyn Hall, chair of District 57's Board "This project is going ahead because of careful financial  planning and our commitment to our students and the community."

It's about time.

18 YEARS?

An embarrassment.
I find it difficult to believe that there is no cafeteria in the upgrade. Any secondary school in PG without a cafeteria is a disgrace. Poor planning by the powers that be.
What I don't understand is why the Ministry of Education has not funded the upgrade. Worst yet that it has been on the books for over 18 years and it came down to local budgeting to get it done.

It is days like these that yes one less MLA will not be a big deal given that we have the Minister of Education right in our own City and even still couldn't get this project done with provincial funding.

Don't get me started on the additional year delay on getting Duchess Park replaced, thanks to the Ministry.
I imagine there just wasn't enough money for a cafeteria. It's awesome that they're getting anything done at all.
You would get a lot more use out of a cafeteria than a music room and multi-purpose rooms.
18 years and three governments of different stripes and the SD finally has to do it. Unbelievable. I look forward to the start of this project. Of course the three mouthpieces for Gordo will be present for a photo op
If the approach by the Ministry of Education and the SD is like it has in past communiqués about other issues, I suspect that the Ministry and the SD might say it is in the business of education, not in the restaurant business.

Maybe the multi-purpose room is exactly that, to be used for multiple purposes, including sitting down with a bag lunch.

18 years is almost 4 full rotations of HS students who have come into the school thinking they might have an addition to their school sometime during their stay there. What a great education for them, seeing how slow the wheels of government and bureaucracy works. Welcome to the real world kids. Maybe they will be able to do something about where we have failed.

And yes, it is us who have failed. These people report to us. So, we obviously have not considered this to be an important enough issue to get mobilized about.

Now, it is interesting that the SD is able to have what appears to an outsider to be a slush fund which has gathered enough money over the years to do this and that the Ministry does not appear to take that not consideration when funding them. I wonder what the details of that are.
