Two of Prince George’s three MLA’s have expressed their support after Premier Gordon Campbell axed the recommendations of the Electoral Boundaries Commission.  The Premier also  announced he will introduce legislation that will change the rules that lay the ground work for the seats in the province.

Education Minister Shirley Bond says she is proud of the people who put forward their thoughts.  "The good news is no loss of seats, but we have to continue to express our views on where the boundaries should be in the ridings."  Bond says there has been a great deal of concern expressed  "And we need to make sure we make our thoughts known."

Pat Bell, Agriculture Minister says "I couldn’t even imagine how I was going to try and cover my new expanded riding."  He says the move by the Premier demonstrates his interest in the rural section of this province  "He has time and time again expressed his opinion that rural BC must receive its fair share in this province."

Just like a pair of old trail horses, sticking their noses in the rears of the horses in front and following along mindlessly. This is why I left the hearing as soon as Pat Bell spoke against the issue.
What did you expect them to say?
Of couse they are happy...they still have their jobs...
not sure why though
"The good news is no loss of seats, but we have to continue to express our views on where the boundaries should be in the ridings."

BINGO! ... that is my read of it as well ...

Why don't we start a more reasonable discussion here to help out?

As I understand it, the "NORTH" will retain its total numbers. There are other ways to slice the northern pie than the existing method. PG may actually still end up with 2 reps rather than 3.

• Should the boundaries stay as they are now – three ridings, all having a relatively large population section urban along with a relatively large geographical section as rural?

• Should the urban boundary proposed for PG taking in a population of about 50,000 be one of the boundaries and the area around PG be divided up among two MLAs so that there is a more clear urban rising and a more clear rural riding?

What is the thinking of how PG should be represented?
I beleive that all three MLA'S want a part of their riding in Prince George because that is where they live and that is where the action (what little there is) is. If you have two rural ridings these MLA'S would have to move to another location. This is not likely to happen, with the present crew, as I dont beleive they would want to live in Mcbride, Vanderhoof, Burns Lake, Ft St James, or Mackenzie.

If we had two rural and one urban riding, and the rural ridings nominated people from their area, then you would in essence have better representation, however I doubt if we will see this happen.

Excuse me Pal - "What Little There is?" Where have you been? Things have not been better in many, many years for this area and our community. Is it so difficult for you to see the positive things? Chester
I could care less if Shirley Bond lost her seat. She represents the miller Connaught areas and she doesn't even respond to our letters and ignores our concerns on the Backpacker motel project.
I agree completely Palopu!
No loss of seats? If I understand correctly, the lower mainland is still getting more seats, which leaves us with fewer seats, proportionally. What we need is MORE, not less. Our MLAs are extremely busy, they have to deal with a unique and wide variety of issues, and they have to travel a heck of a lot. In Victoria they struggle to make our issues heard amid a virtual sea of MLAs from the south.

This region's resource-based industries haul in a huge amount of money for the province. Over and over again by various organizations, Vancouver is ranked the best city or one of the top three cities in the world to live. Where do they think they get the money to afford such an astronomically high standard of living? And the argument is that they're UNDER-REPRESENTED??? Gosh, they're hard done by, all right. :-/

The north needs and deserves MORE representation, not less, and I think we're not fighting hard enough to get it.

Palopu: "what little there is"? YOUR life may be boring- ;) -but our MLAs work really hard, I can guarantee you that, and I'm not even a supporter of their party.
actually, bitter, the other two are no better...
They have to check everything with mr campbell before they even go home, I bet.
They are three good little puppets.
Firstly insofar as the action in Prince George. One mans meat is another mans potatoes. Action for some is sitting on the couch with a beer and a hot dog watching a Hockey game. Others go to the Casino, others to various and sundry events through-out the City. What ever they do, that is their action. Action for some of these politicians is to rub shoulders with others of their ilk, and they would be hard pressed to find that kind of action in Mackenzie, Ft St James, Mcbride, Burns Lake, Houston etc; That is why they all want part of their riding to be in PRince George.

Satvis. Most people in the World work hard. I suspect that our MLA'S dont work any harder than most other people. In any event that is what we pay them for. If they dont like it then they should get out of the game. I never asked anyone of them to run for office, this was a decision that they made on their own for whatever reason, and we pay them good.
