UNBC President Don Cozzetto,  MLA Pat Bell, Deputy Premier Shirley Bond, Premier Gordon Campbell,  Charles Jago and Mayor Colin Kinsley celebrate.

The $30.75 million dollar Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre is now officially open.

A thousand spectators were outfitted with yellow noodles to wiggle and waggle in the air to celebrate the opening which started with a procession into the gymnasium.

The march in of the VIP’s and athletes was reminiscent of the Olympic games.  Flag bearers carried flags into the gymnasium of the new Charles Jago Sport Centre this morning, ushering in the Premier, Mayor of Prince George and the President of UNBC.

Then some 250 athletes carrying banners from their respective organizations filled the gymnasium. The not only represented gymnasts,  past  medal winners at previous  Olympic, and commonwealth games,  UNBC athletes,  gymnasts, soccer layers, school boards, and the communities  which will also  benefit  from this facility. The scene stealers may well have been the Tiny Timberwolves, the children from the UNBC Childcare centre.

Premier Gordon Campbell opened his remarks saying he has never come to Prince George without having someone approach him with an idea that could make the north better.  Such a person was Charles Jago said the Premier.  “This is about leadership about a community’s vision and about partnership.” The Premier says it is a day to be celebrated   “This is a great day for British Columbia, it happens to be great day for Prince George, it happens to be a great day for the north, but it’s a great day for British Columbia.”

But the day was clearly Charles Jago’s.  When his presence was announced, the crowd would not stop applauding the former President of UNBC.  There was a standing ovation, and the crowd was not satisfied until Jago stepped from the back row and took a bow.   M.C., Deputy Premier Shirley Bond remarked “It is so typical of Charles Jago, always in the background when he should be front and centre taking the credit for which he is so deserving.”

Current UNBC President Don Cozzetto said to Jago “You were the person with the guts with the determination to get us here today.” Cozzetto related the story of Bill Lynch the Chair of the Sports Centre Committee, who carried a photo of a UNBC athlete who practiced basketball free throws in a converted squash court, a hoop nailed on the wall.  Lynch he said, carried a photo and presented it to everyone who would listen and told them it was not acceptable that northern athletes had to use a converted squash court.  Cozzetto says the   photo of the converted squash court will be placed in the entrance hall of the new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre as a reminder of the roots of the facility

Un, bloody believable.
Just got back to work after viewing CJSC.

One of the first to run around the artificial surface throw a frisbee with my grandson.........

Another diamond on the Prince George ring.

Great bus service to and from the site for "all" to take advantage of. Courteous drivers and great weather. Everyone is coming to the party today.

What is this about a Cancer Clinic at 1:00 p.m. Somebody trying to listen to the NOrth?
Airport?
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

Can't wait until they fill it up and it's fully functional.

Way to go City of PG, UNBC and PacificSport Northern BC...way to go!!
A great day for Prince George...I hope we next will see a performing arts centre which will make our city complete.
Let's not forget about the real people behind the NSC. UNBC's Len McNamara and Tania Bopp, along with countless student employees, worked tirelessly to keep the former Fitness Centre a clean, useful place for thousands of current and former UNBC students (as well as staff, faculty, and the public). They sacrificed both sleep to open early and social lives to stay open late. They did their best to make client suggestions a reality, and maintained the facility exceptionally well in the years before and during the planning for the NSC. I am thankful that the movers and shakers moved mountains to create the NSC, but I am just as grateful to Len and Tania for providing a facility that served most clients' basic fitness purposes just fine; furthermore, they did it with pride and hope for the future, not with some sort of "shame photo" in their pockets.

Current UNBC students and fellow citizens of Prince George, today is a very wonderful day!
How nice it is to see some positive comments and good feelings expressed here! The new CJSC is just fabulous. The cancer society announced a few minutes ago....GREAT! Now I'm going to speed up to the airport and hear the 3pm announcement, and I'm assuming it's a final word on the expansion project. We are indeed maturing as a city!
Yup and while it's always nice to get more, it's pretty tough to argue that PG is getting the shaft when it comes to government dollars flowing into the City.

Truth be told, I think we've done QUITE well over the past number of years.

Good stuff PG!

While it is a great sports center I find it gaulling that the politicians use this for such a great photo op when it was our money that funded the centre in the first place. Too bad the real backers of this facility could not be on stage instead of those pretending to be the main spark plugs behind this good news centre.
It is our money, but who makes the final decisions to go ahead? - Yes, the ones we elected (delegated) to do so!

The politicians were elected (and re-elected) democratically!

That is why they are running the show and are in the pictures!

Democracy in action.

The simple fact of the matter is that "our money" could have easily been spent on numerous other worthy causes throughout the Province, causes that would likely service a MUCH larger population base.

The bottomline for me is that I'm glad to see a good chunk of it "coming home" and I'm glad to see investment of this scale occuring in our area of the Province.
Thanks for the sane comments Realist, I was starting to get nauseated.

Its always interesting to see a situation where we are taxed by the Government, and they then use our money to build a facility, and then they get into the Photo Op and act like it was all their doing. Its enough to make you want to up chuck.

Each and every one of those dudes in the Photo are on the Government payrolls and were paid a tidy sum to carry out the business of Government. Why is the construction of a building such a big deal. Its only been going on for thousands of years. Why do people get so excited, and then 6 months later they are conspicuous by their absence.

This appears to be a replacement for politicians kissing babies.

Has anyone noticed that Pat Bell looks somewhat like Mike Harcourt??
Pat Bell the next BC Premier, I could live with that.
"and then they get into the Photo Op and act like it was all their doing. Its enough to make you want to up chuck."

Pal and Realist, no B.C. Premier (or MLAs) has EVER stayed away from opening ceremonies of this nature in the past and won't in the future!

It would be interpreted as an insult by the community!

I still have the picture in my mind of Premier Clarke and a large delegation of MLAs attending the signing of the Nishga treaty and what a photo-op that was!

So you think he should have stayed away from that event and even perhaps the launching ceremonies of his pet project Fast Ferries?

Unimaginable.

Unless you can assure me with 100% certainty (and you can't!) that future NDP premiers (if there ever will be any!) or any others will refrain from attending similar grand photo-ops I will think of the negative comments as sour grapes!

"Has anyone noticed that Pat Bell looks somewhat like Mike Harcourt?"

Some similarity in as much that Mike too was a real kind human being, smart and what I would call a real *mensch.*

Cheers!
