Excellent news! Is five years for completion a reasonable time frame?
My hunch is that finding people to operate the facility will be the biggest challenge. Let's hope that the "if you build it they will come" phrase holds true.

This is certainly good news. Will be very interested to hear more as the news develops.

Not if we make the kinds of investments we need to make, like creative and cultural amenities, cleaner air, and an attitude adjustment about what makes the 21st Century economy work, even in "resource towns."
I agree with you 110% bohemian.

The MPB may actually prove to be a blessing in disguise, which forces us to transform PG into the type of City that you describe. We just need more people to see that and to believe that it can happen. I'm on board :)
What about the NDP? Do they support this new cancer strategy? It seems this announcement is that the winner of the next election in 09 will be the party responsible for implimenting the promise....
Damm. Does this mean that real estate prices will go up again due to speculation?
Had the president of Toronto Dominion Bank (head office) in a cab the other day and all the banks are still certain that the economy in PG will go from bad to worse due to forestry.
Chad, don't worry about the NDP. They promised a cancer clinic for the north then reneged on it during their term in office. Then the Libs sat on it for almost ten years. Finally it MAY come to pass. I sure hope it happens faster than the Cariboo Connector. Good news, I hope. Much needed and PG is so a good place to live.

With the rise in the Canuck dollar over the past two years, most manufacturing cities will have some belt tightening to do. Those who are providing products to the USA as primary destination are all going to have to review what they will be doing.

Think of Bombardier. They have clients in other places as well as the USA. So, the other locations should be okay since the currencies have not fluctuated that much against one another. Hopefully any contracts they have with the USA are in C$. Otherwise they may loose their shirts. I would think, however, that such contracts have some type of currency protection built in.

You mean the idiots who destroyed the BC economy while the rest of the country thrived? I can't imagine too many people are interested in repeating that little experience.
