Good bye cracker jacks, hello jumping jacks?

School District 57 has developed a leadership role when it comes to looking after the health of the students in its classes.

It banned smoking from school property about ten years ago, just this fall, the province has banned smoking on all school properties.

School District 57 tackled the healthy food issues a full three years before the Province standardized the approach to food and beverages in schools.

So…the next step is exercise and how to promote “Healthy Choices Active Living”.

The object being to  get elementary students active for 30 minutes a day,  and  high school students active for 150 minutes  a week.

While  Trustee Michelle Marrelli wanted her colleagues to support the  establishment of an ad hoc committee to look at  coming up with  recommendations   on how to  implement such “activity”, the rest of the Board  is torn over the make up of the Committee and  the work load on staff.

Superintendent Brian Pepper wanted to have some time to discuss with staff how this kind of program would best be supported.

The Board has tabled the item until the next meeting which is set for the 9th of October

Agree to disagree, and agree to meet again. A.k.a. job security, methinks.
For elementary students i beleive they still get two 15 min recess breaks, correct me if im worng. So this makes the 30 min. So what we do here is like the majority of us who went to elementary school "back in the day" is to kick them out rain or shine and promote physical activity during these break periods. Take away all the little techno gadgets they have become habituated to during the break times and get them active. As for highshool goes most of the free time if any is put towards studying so its hard to fit in physical activity. More diverse physical education and recreation programs need to be brought in and backed with acedemic credit.(basically im saying provide more options to students) This way the students will still get credits towards graduation while haveing a well rounded workload and lifestyle.
"The object being to get elementary students active for 30 minutes a day,"

Its called a morning "walk to school program" coupled with an afternoon "walk home program".

For those who are too close to the school, they can walk around the school building to make up the time difference.
Whoa, when i went to school i had to trudge a kilometre or so to school, in all kinds of weather. Unlike grandpas stories of X-country skiing 10 kilometres, albeit true. My neighbour loads the round yard apes into the SUV and drives them from 1 street away, and she's not the only one. And popular research indicates techno gadjets promote hand eye coordinaton and extremely powerful thumbs. All important training regimes for video gaming and marathon remote conttrolling olympics.
I used to walk 3 miles uphill to school, both ways.

Then they changed it to kilometers and it was all downhill from there.
