Air Quality Lots Of Talk No Action: One Man's Opinion

By Ben Meisner

There are times that I miss doing a talk show.

Those are the times when a politician sits across from you and makes statements that should be challenged.  I heard a number of those statements  at the  Chamber of Commerce  sponsored meeting on  Air Quality last night.

Councilor Don Zurowski told the gathering the City cannot regulate industry, only make decisions on land use and zoning when it comes to the matter of air quality in the city.

Now wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that the city had the head of CN in western Canada appear before them to spell out safety improvements so that another derailment like the one  in August  did not re occur?  Hmmm, what does that have to do with land zoning?

For example,  could the city not call upon CANFOR to appear before Council to explain what they are doing to reduce the odour of  the effluent from their mills? Could they not call on Husky to appear before them to ask the question of what they are doing to improve air quality?

Then there was the statement that, "The Nechako group had caused some things to happen" in dealing with the quality of air  they were living with because of the  Asphalt plants across the river.

Gee, is that a suggestion that when it comes to getting things done in this city a good strong opposition group is how it is accomplished?

Is it the job of that group or for that matter PACHA to ensure that the residents of the city have good quality air to breath?

You must be assured that if we didn’t have PACHA there would be less effort to clean up the air in the city.

In the old days people used to say, never mind the odour, "It’s the smell of money”.  Oh it may still be the smell of money , but now its the smell of dollars that won't be invested in Prince George because  people worry about  raising a family in this "fragile" and  "stressed" air shed.

People also don't buy  the idea that  they are  the ones  to blame for the air  quality issues.

You may remember when the City took a swing at the bad air by passing an Air Quality By-law. It legislated grammas from making pies over a wood stove, stopped those people who burn wood in their home to heat it, and also stopped those pesky people who like to have a back yard burn in a fire pit.

Did it improve air quality?  Of course not, but it looked like the city was doing something and the real culprits of our air quality must have laughed themselves to sleep on that one.

So when I hear a politician talk about what they have done and are doing, I always think I would like to have them behind a mike to enable me to get them to eat those words.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Bang on!!!!!!
Right on, Ben. I live in the country and still get to enjoy my backyard firepit with weenie roasts for my kids. I feel for people who live in the city for the crap the local politicians have forced upon them.
I feel sorry for us too Parrothead, we are victims of politicians who seek only to get re-elected instead of acting on behalf of the children, babies, old folks and healthy youg adults.

To quote Ben "So when I hear a politician talk about what they have done and are doing, I always think I would like to have them behind a mike to enable me to get them to eat those words."

We haven't got you behind the mike, Ben, so it must be up to ordinary citizens to start thinking of the health of our valley and voting for candidates who will effect change.

We can co-exist with industry if planning will just get industry re-located out of our valley.
Ben:"It legislated grammas from making pies over a wood stove, stopped those people who burn wood in their home to heat it,..."

Unfortunately it didn't stop some people from burning wood to heat their homes!

We live in the Hart within city limits, our neighbours start burning wood in September right through April (8 months of the year) during the night (when the smoke is invisible) regardless of any air advisories.

Obviously they don't care if the smoke in the air is so thick in the morning that one could cut it with a knife.

A phonecall to the city confirmed that there is nothing anybody can do about it!

Those who have no concern about the environment and the health of others will blissfully ignore city bylaws as long as they can get away with it.

There is NO enforcement!

Cheers!

I drove by the Husky oil refinery last Satuarday and almost puked as I gaged on the sulfur with my windows up and freash air off. The wind at the time was blowing directly into the downtown. I notice this is common around 4AM for the Husky plant and then when the wind changes and the sun comes up they hold back on the pollution.

I think Husky is responsible for 90% of the smell in PG and they willfully pollute during the night while we all sleep.

That is not fair to you.

Makes for bad feelings.

Tried any Councillors for their input on how to control your neighbour?
In case you have not heard the news this morning, there is a greenhouse operation in Salmon Arm (I believe) which swtiched form gas to wood heat for their business. They cannot afford the gas anymore. People are complaining about the extensive smoke.

The really bad thing about this is that there are green offsetting points given for this because the CO2 it produces comes from biological materials abovethe ground rather than below the ground. That itself is a policy I would dispute. However, as long as that is in place, one has to fight only on the grounds of health. I thought that issue was settled, but it appears people are forgettting about it.

Perhaps in 10 years we will also forget about second hand smoke and people will start smoking again in public places .... I do not know how often that fighte has to be fought repeatedly.
Here are the facts on that dreaded co2. Man caused co2 is something like 1 to 3% of the total co2 and Canada's share of that is something like .1%. But hey it keeps the Gore's and Suzuki's rich and gives our local newspaper something to write about. Notice how the Citizen only gives a one sided view in support of AGW(Anthropogenic Global Warming). But that is how the media makes money, reporting on whatever the latest scary fad happens to be. In the early 70's it was global cooling.
"Tried any Councillors for their input on how to control your neighbour?"

There are city bylaws. They state that one can burn wood if that is the only source of heat available. But in this subdivision everybody is connected to hydro and natural gas. So they must use electric or gas normally. And during an air advisory nobody is allowed to burn any wood.

The bylaws have no teeth because they are not enforced and are purely complaint driven. Nobody from the city comes around in the middle of the night to check where all the thick woodsmoke is coming from!

If you complain (and if it is only you) it is not a big deal because all the other neighbours don't seem to mind breathing the polluted air. It is probably just your imagination or you have a screw loose.

If you keep complaining the city will eventually take the guilty party to court (if they don't stop) but the one that complained will have to testify in court.

Well, I am afraid of the ensuing guaranteed retaliation.

Thanks for your concern Foo738.

Never mind gramma's weinee roast or the neighbour's wood stove, what about the slash burn being conducted in the Haldi Rd & Highwqay 16 west area. Geez, maybe it was only road dust I saw there.
Slash burning going south to Quesnel ruined an otherwise clear and sunny day!

It's business as usual.
what you put up with is what you get to live with...
Yep, laws are useless unless they are actually enforced.

They look very good on paper, but that's all.
