Prince George, B.C. - Containers are moving through Prince George now.  These double decker rail movements were photographed by an Opinion250  reader  Saturday afternoon.

While CN  has announced the $20 million dollar  intermodal  site at the First Avenue  yard in Prince George is  operating, the official  grand opening won't likely take place  until November,  around the time that the first containers from the first  ship to arrive at the Prince Rupert  port, make their way through the region.

That first container ship is expected to arrive  in Prince Rupert on October 31st.

See. The containers didn't fall off the tracks. Maybe because these ones were empty?
This train departed at 17000 ft long(3.2 miles). Is that a safe length?
Safe? I don't feel safe with CN, due to their off rail experiences, when all they have is two parked engines and a caboose
3.2 miles long??
Wow!
Assuming that figure is correct, and I am sure it is,that would mean it's a thru freight, obviously.
That means all other trains will have to be small enough to enter a siding and let it go by should they meet face to face at some point between here and Rupert.
If there is any.
As far as I know, there ain't no 3.2 mile long sidings on that stretch of track.
If someone screws up,it's going to be one hell of a mess!!
For a company who is so concerned about profits, one would think their first priority would be the rail bed and servicing it.

Nobody is making money when the rail line is blocked and no freight is moving. Time is money and delays are a huge thing for all of the customers using rail for shipping their goods to market.

I notice another CN job fair this coming week in PG. Hopefully they are hiring more labourers to work on the line rather than folks to sort cars in the yard. Chester
Does P.G. get 10c per container coming thru this town? If not, then how much?
There have been a number of Containers on flat cars in the Prince George yard for the past week, which I suspect were being used or training. Were these containers actually on a train or were they observed in the yard along first avenue.

The CN extended 12 sidings west of prince george from 100 car sidings to 200 or more cars. I dont expect that they will have any trouble passing the few trains that use the track between \
Prince George and Prince Rupert

Harbinger. Prince George will get diddlysquat on the Containers coming through Prince George however we will get a few Engineer and Trainmen jobs. In addition there have been 13 jobs added so far to run the Intermodal Terminal and there could be a few more jobs. After that *Bobs your Uncle*
Training trains? How interesting. Not even scavenger rights at a train wreck? Drat!! Bummer!
Now the noise along first avenue into the downtown residential area will keep us awake at all hours of the night. I'm moving!
Finally, its starting. Now lets get them out of work forestry industry working and get this economy back on track.

So if all this goods come from China to fill the Canadian Tires stores. Why not open up a huge distribution center for western Canada in Prince George to distribute it for the western provinces, instead of sending it all the way back east by train, and then ship it back by truck to western Canada. For that matter can't Walmart do the same?????

"Now the noise along first avenue into the downtown residential area will keep us awake at all hours of the night. I'm moving!"

Hey, dgdiggler, lots of residential areas adjoin the CN. Not everyone can move, just think of all the slums that will be created.

Poor old downtown; who on earth in the City is concerned with it? Not the decision makers obviously.
I know, I know Foo, but when the rail cars collide, or should I say couple together in the yards on first ave, it sounds like a bomb going off! To be jolted awake by this at three in the morning after being sound asleep can't be good for one's health.

And He speaks: the container terminal will no where near fill the void created by the downfall of the forestry industry in terms of jobs for this city. Have you not been reading about the issues surrounding the goods from China? Canada doesnt want them.....
"So if all this goods come from China to fill the Canadian Tires stores. Canadian Tire does not use CN they use CP.
Their imports come in to Vancouver and are moved CP to Edmonton for distribution.
None of their products are moved east only to be shipped back west.
The Containers from Prince Rupert will be loaded to the American Midwest and Eastern Canada Toronto,Montreal,to service the Walmarts, Target,Canadian Tire, and other stores in these highly populated areas, there will be no stopping in Prince George.

The Container Ships that go to Vancouver will continue to do so,and it is these Containers that will have product for Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and the Interior, same as always. At some point you might get a few Containers direct from Prince Rupert to Prince George, however there are not enough people here, that it would amount to anything.

In the whole of North Central B C from Hope to Prince Rupert, to Ft St. John you have apprx 300,000 people. In the same area Chicago, Detroit, New York, Toronto, Montreal, etc; you would have in excess of 300 Million. You dont have to be a genius to figure our where these Containers are going, and where the money is. In the overall scheme of things, small town Prince George doesnt register.
