Striking employees at West Fraser Mill in Terrace say the news of the shut down of Skeena Sawmills was immanent.

The workers had been part of the striking west coast forest workers and they had feared that when the strike ended the company would shut the facility down.

West Fraser says current market conditions are to blame, a low US housing market and the rapid rise in the Canadian dollar.

The mill employs about 80 hourly workers and 20 salaried staff. The planer at the mill will operate on a temporary basis starting next Monday.

Workers say that they are being told that the mill will likely re open in July of next year. The recent contract that we signed  included a clause that workers will get 10 days a year for every year of service  as a severance , some of the workers have 40 years of service.

Can't say they lost their jobs, "cold turkey". It was obviously a new graduated theme.
By the way. What time does the bus leave for Alberta?
...and so it begins!
Hate to see anyone lose their job,but it is going to get much worse throughout the north central interior/coast regions as well.
Unfortunately,I would think the job opportunities are pretty limited in Terrace, but hopefully these guy's will find work somewhere very soon.
My sympathy to all those involved.
