Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam says she is confident about the community of Mackenzie in spite of the major down turn in the forest industry.

Pope and Talbot she said, ”Are still making money and they continue to pay their bills."

Killam says  the area has a certain appeal "I do realize that Abitibi has taken down time along with other mills including CANFOR who have cut staff, but you must remember that we have the best basket of timber in the entire province and no matter who is operating, it is attractive to them."

Houses Killam says continue to sell "They certainly are not selling too cheap and there is a demand so we continue to survive and prosper."

"There is no doubt that Mackenzie is going to take some hits" says Killam "but we are trying to move away from a forest dependent community. We are trying to ramp up our tourism industry and we hope to be able to get the road built between Ft St James and Mackenzie"

She says 2009 will be a special time for Mackenzie "We are again going to host the BC Northern Winter games and that shows how the community pulls together."

Pope & Talbot is not broke in the true sense of the word...
They are just a bit cash poor right now!
Wish I could say it will get better, but it won't anytime soon.
It will get worse...much worse.
In Fort St.James, they have extended the shutdown time by another week at least.
Apparently Midway is down too?
So how do you make money when your mills are not running??
Sounds to me like somebody is wishfull thinking and maybe not telling the whole story?
What is REALLY going on?
And by the way,the houses in MacKenzie are dirt cheap, just in case the mayor didn't notice?
Has she noticed what they are selling for everywhere else in the province?
Yeah...she's is very optimistic but then again that is her job.

I work for the Castlegar plant and we have been down two weeks with plans to retart on the 29th but they have cancelled that too. Who know what is going to happen. Grand Forks ans Spearfish are shut down too.

P&T just got busted here as well trying to sell off portions of their TFL to private interests...good grief who is running this dog and pony show to make decisions like that. Sell off their timber now and IF they ever get back in operation what do they do? Buy it back at inflated prices?? Good thinking.
Bummer Dag.
Hope things improve soon!
I guess there has been some creative bookeeping throughout P&T including Fort.St.James if you believe the rumours.
I still don't see how all the downtime can help them survive.Hard to do that without money!
Looks as if there is a potential buyer for the F.S.J. mill, but nobody seems to know who it is.
Anybody got any guesses?
Hey! Them folk who got their houses burnt down in Kaleefornia are gonna need some first class wood to rebuild them thar homes. Bigger and better , too! And it aint gonna be done just by Georgia yellow pine (aka. first class firewood). Don't run away, them Yanks are gonna need us. Maybe we can make a side deal with them, bypassing the joke called the softwood lumber agreement. They want our lumber this time? Make 'em pay thru the nose. And besides, it's the insurance companies who are gonna pay. Hey, stick it to the man, dude!! Could happen.
