Prince George, B.C. - Scientists don’t expect the rumbling from the Nasko Cone area southwest of Prince George, to result in any volcanic eruption.
On October 9th, there were deep rumblings happening about 20 kilometers west of the Nazko Cone ( which is 100 km west of Quesnel) . That seismic activity continues, and scientist say the information they have gathered indicates the quakes are most likely the result of magma movement. Based on the number, size and location of the seismic events, there is nothing at this time to indicate that a volcanic eruption is likely, thus there is no threat to public safety.
The magma is intruding deep in the earth’s crust in the general region of Nazko. To get a better picture of what is happening at the depths where the shivers are taking place, five more pieces of equipment have been installed to better monitor the situation.
The scientists say that if the magma were to start moving towards the surface of the earth, they would expect the number and size of the quakes to increase significantly. and is the likely cause of this seismic activity.
Although it is doubtful there would be an eruption , if there WAS one, scientist say it would most likely be "a small cone building event" similar to the Nazco eruption that took place about 7000 years ago.
