Pope and Talbot Boosts Wood Pulp Price...Again

Prince George, B.C. - For the fourth time this year, Pope and Talbot has announced it is increasing  the price for its  wood pulp ( northern bleached softwood grades).

The new  price is  up  a full $20 dollars from  the old mark, making the new price for North American customers $870 and  $850 for its European  market.

This is the fourth price increase  since February  of this year.  For North American customers, the price has increased just over 10% since January.  The year started off with  the price at $790 for  North American  customers,  now,  just 10 months later, the same customers are paying  $870.

and the reason for this is?? come on guys dig a little deeper on these stories...
Wood chips are expensive at the moment because there is a shortage due to mill closures and shut downs. So naturally this will effect the pulp price.
wood pulp is more expensive because the lumber giants are trying to maintain their profits since mills are closing down.

With innovations such as the internet, people are not needing as much paper to let's say - read the news!
I agree dg. The bottom line for companies and their shareholders is profitability. They will keep cutting until that happens. Watch Canfor to see how many more will be released in the coming year. And these will be long term (higher paid) employees. Chester
suppply and demand. pulp inventories are low worldwide, so producers can charge more. last time pulp prices were this high the dollar was 30some percent lower. so the fact that the pulp mills are raking it in (with the high dollar) is an indication of the increased efficiencies. unfortunately these efficiencies mean less employees. no shortage of $$ in pulp mills right now, just a shortage of long term vision and skilled labour
