Prnce George, B.C. - Workers at the Pope and Talbot sawmill in Fort St James will be heading back to work on the 5th of November.

Pope & Talbot, has announced the scheduled re-opening of the Ft. St. James mill  and  facilities in Grand Forks and Castlegar.

The Grand Forks and Castlegar saw mills  will be brought back on stream  at a reduced  capacity, operating at just one shift .

The three mills have been on a temporary shutdown since October 15th due to market conditions.only the Fort St, James Mill will be operating at  normal levels.

Pope and Talbot CEO Harold Stanton said the reduced capacity is due to the falling prices of softwood lumber products brought on by the poor U.S. housing market and the continued strengthening of the Canadian Dollar. "Unfortunately the continued problems in the housing market have severely hurt the demand for our softwood lumber products," said Stanton. "As we move forward we will continue to make adjustments as the market dictates."

I sure hope they pay the contractors.

Don't count on it metalman. Sad but true story of the game of contracting. Sure would be nice tho.
Google, CHBC TV, from Kelowna, 5pm news Oct.30/07, regarding the contractors working for Pope and Talbot, at Nakusp, their a pretty pissed off lot.
That's the word in the Fort as well.Apparently, they have told local business that there is no money to pay the bills.
Bummer!
Years ago Jimmy Pattison make reference to ones cutting his losses. What he was alluding to was, in business jargon.Your first loss is you best loss. if you are losing money on a venture, don't, pursue it, by putting more investment into it, accept your loss and stop. I'm afraid too many contractors will do this very thing wishing for a favorable out come ,they will pursue that first loss. The deck is stacked against the contractors.
Now the contractors have been told that they will have to file a claim to get paid, whatever the hell that will mean.
That's a tough way to earn a living and these contractors deserve better!
Nasty business.
