Prince George , B.C. - Any  surplus School District 57 had  hoped to have, and use for some extras,  is gone.

The dollars are being frozen or put back into the budget for the year until the School District can sort out the impact of a new funding formula  being used by the Province,  the new formula means  School District 57's budget  isn't what it thought it would be.

The Board of Trustees  got no warning of the change, and  Trustees were in  shock that there has been no consultation. The Trustees have agreed to  write a letter  to the Ministry of Education , protesting the change.

Chair Lyn Hall says the change  has left him  speechless,  as the  funding formula  will  have an impact  on the  entire district.

While  the  budget for School District 57  for the current school year is o.k.,  the Board doesn't know how  the formula will impact  future plans.

Shirley Bond has said it is being done to make up for an "administration error".
Explain please Shirley, and also explain why the money was cut with no consultation with the school districts in the middle of a school year??
So who screwed up?
A nasty bit of fun with numbers, and one that should cost Shirley Bond her job!!
Parents have a right to be furious over this and unfortunately,we are probably going to see more cuts in the near future.
Cut,cut,cut,...hell,we have to pay for the Olympic's somehow!
Nice to see where the Liberals priorities really are when it come to education!
Fire her!!
No! don't fire her! They will just appoint some other person with soft damp palms to a position they know nothing about and it will take a year and a half to figure out what is going on, by then there will be one of those 'cabinet shuffles' and we start over, again. The school districts are overstaffed, underfunded, inefficient and a waste of taxpayers' money.
metalman.
...a certian amount of truth in what you are saying metalman, but you never know, maybe if they fired her useless ass they just might give the job to somebody who DOES know what they are doing?
( what am I thinking..there is not much chance of THAT happening anytime soon!)
You are right metalman, the school districts are underfunded.
Kiddies Maui Campbell thanks you for your sacrifice in attending rundown schools for the good of the olympics and the convention centre.
I was wondering how come the SD was able to carry forward surpluses so that they could fund a construction project at CH Secondary without having to get funds through the Ministry.

Does anyone who is not in the Ministry or on the Board really know what kind of games are being played and who is playing them? I suspect everyone is playing a bit of cat and mouse.

As I understand it, in the case of Districts which have a high percentage of part time students they may have been getting a bit of a windfall since 2002 since each student was guaranteed to bring in a 0.5FTE fund, even thought they may only be taking one course. It was argued that the rest would be required for administrative costs.

That is the way I understand it. If I am mistaken in that, someone can maybe explain it better with some inside knowledge.
