Prince George, B.C. -  Starting in March of 2008, Priince George Regional Hospital will be "smoke free".

Smoking is not allowed in the building, but,  there has been an area on the main grounds  for staff  and patients to  have a cigarette.  It also has not been uncommon to see  staff, nurses and physicians, puffing  in the area  outside  next to the Ambulance bay doors at  Emergency.

All that is about to  change at PGRH and all other  facilities under the Northern Health umbrella.

Health Authorities throughout the province  will ban smoking on all  health facility grounds.  That means no  more smoking on health facility grounds  by patients, visitors or health  care workers.

While the Provincial deadline for implementation is October  of 2008, Northern Health will have its smoke free policy fully implemented in March 2008.

  • Smoke-free policy will apply to all persons on Northern Health property including staff, patients, visitors,  olunteers, students, contractors and other persons providing services to NH or acting on behalf of NH.
  • Exceptions and alternate timelines are being made for mental health and addictions services, home and community care (including palliative care) and cultural ceremonial use of tobacco within program areas or
    Northern Health facilities.

I always remember my old dad who once remarked on the way into the hospital,
"Look at those poor old buggers standing out there..",he said,
"Even during the war in the prisoner of war camps,we were allowed to at least have a damn smoke"!!
Unfortunately,a lot of these older people are dying and have nothing left to look forward to but smoke out in the wind and rain at below zero...very sad.
I wonder what they think of all this?
