Protestors Genny Michiel, Darcy Michiel and Richard Krueger wave to passersby as they try to raise awareness about the Skeena headwaters and Shell
Prince George, B.C. – Saving the headwaters of the Skeena River was the focus of a couple of protests that took place in Prince George over the weekend.
Protestors were spotted at the Shell station at 5th and Carney, and at the Turbo station at 15th and Foothills on Saturday.

The Skeena Watershed Coalition says the activities by Shell to tap into coal-methane gas will dirty the waters and , according to the Coalition, will be “potentially debilitating to the watershed’s globally significant ecological and cultural heritage resources.”
The headwaters are the birthplace of the Skeena, Stikine and Nass rivers.
Shell says it has been very sensitive to the environmental concerns and has drilled only three of the five test wells it has been permitted to drill and only in sites that had already been disturbed. Shell also says no dirty water would be discharged in the area, existing clearings would be used to minimize the company’s “footprint” and new roads would not be built to access the area.
