Protestors Genny Michiel, Darcy Michiel and Richard Krueger wave to  passersby as they  try to raise awareness about the Skeena headwaters and Shell

Prince George, B.C. – Saving the headwaters of  the  Skeena  River was the focus of a couple of protests that took place in Prince George over the weekend.

Protestors were spotted at the Shell station at 5th and Carney, and at the Turbo station at 15th and Foothills on Saturday.

(at right, the Skeena headwaters)

The Skeena Watershed  Coalition says the  activities by Shell  to  tap into coal-methane gas will  dirty the waters and , according to the Coalition, will be  “potentially debilitating to the watershed’s globally significant ecological and cultural heritage resources.”

The headwaters are the birthplace of the Skeena, Stikine and Nass rivers.

Shell says it has been very sensitive to the environmental concerns and has drilled only three of the five test wells it has been permitted to drill and only in sites that had already been disturbed.  Shell also says no dirty water would be discharged in the area, existing clearings would be used to minimize the company’s “footprint” and new roads would not be built to access the area.

I heard about this on facebook. Looks pretty nasty to me. Apperently the process turns the ground acidic and kills all the surrounding vegitation. IMO the tourism potential of that valley far exceeds the value to the locals over what any gassification process would.
A tourist mecca in our own backyard. Ever been there?
Well we need more gas oil and electricity so our Amercan freinds can do their part to polute our envirnoment.

Cheers
I agree (vis a vi our 'american friends') resource extraction is all about the money, and we are left with the smoking hole in the ground when the multinational companies have used up what they came for (I don't think Shell is u.s. owned, are they?)
Let us hold fast to our environmental protection policies, even if we are still in the process of deciding what they are, and how to apply them. We need to move slowly on SOME of these issues, to ensure we, and the environment, are protected, now and in the future. The minerals and other elements in the ground will wait for us to remove them. Like at Kemess (North) I don't think the copper and gold are going anywhere. Maybe in a few years we will have new processes that reduce or eliminate pollution from industry, and we do not have to trade off our resources for profits today and headaches tomorrow.
metalman.
My dad told me when I was a little kid that Shell sold petrochemicals to the Nazis during the Second World War. So I don't buy my gas there. That reason works fer me. I also saw a program about coal bed methane mining and what it did to the land. It weren't nice. Maybe them folks protesting can get hold of this or those documentaries about coal bed methane. It would be to their advantage. Again, what it does to the land and water ain't nice at all.
Remember the San Acito Dirt Shrew. This project is soaked in their blood.........
Well I've been there and it is nice. So now we need the opportunity to look at what Shell is proposing, right?

I don't think one should be scared off by picture of the worst case scenario, and the same goes for the best pictures that Shell has. That's kind of like deciding if you should get married by looking at some hairy nude picture of Stalin's old mom. Then no one would get married. And getting married after looking at Playboy nudes is just as bad.

Pictures are for scaring councilors and politicians so wait until you are elected before getting all silly and flapping your arms around.

Thanks Chadermando I couldn't remember where it was I first heard about this.....received it on facebook as well. Good for these protestors for standing up for what they believe in :)
