Taser Video Shocks the World: One Man's Opinion

By Ben Meisner

I counted six people, (4 RCMP officers, 2 security guards, and a few airport personnel ) anyone in the world (and believe me it is estimated over 100 million people are watching the outcome of this one) would tell you that is sufficient to put a man down regardless of what sort of state he was in .
Think about it, did Robert Dziekanski have a lethal weapon on him?  He had just arrived aboard a flight from Germany. Do you think they forgot to screen him and hence the reason to hit him with the tazer?
We look like a country with a police force out of control.
The video has been shown in over 100 countries now and the publicity coming from it doesn’t exactly speak volumes about our conduct.
So what did we do?  Well we got an RCMP officer to say that we should wait for an investigation into this death, and inquest for example. Now that police officer (who just happened to be at the last inquest I attended into the death of Ian Bush) would know full well that the inquest cannot, I repeat cannot place blame. So much for that.
Well, he added, the Public Complaints Commissioner will investigate, oh…. who will do that investigation and then turn it over to the Commissioner?  The RCMP.
As I have said previously, we should be ashamed of ourselves .  For those who think it was okay for the RCMP to do what they did, better check with the millions of people around the world who are outraged at what took place in Canada.
The Mounties in the red surge are not standing proud today, nor should they be.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Ben, be kind and leave this story be, the world is watching, the video tells all. There is no need for 3 articles about the same thing. Not that it isn't news worthy, but it appears you are media sensationalizing this blemish on our country and province. To be honest, the same posts and banter over and over by the redneck architects of righteousness is getting quite annoying.
If he did have a lethal weapon on him, they wouldn't have used the tazer, they would have drawn their 9 mm's.

"we look like a counrty with a police force out of control"

An assine statement. Canada has had 6 mounties shot and killed within the past 2 or so years and I don't know how many other members of other police forces have been killed or injured. Can it be said that Canadian Society is out of control?
You should see what kind of reputation other police forces in the world have before you come down on the RCMP.
I would think that if there is any criminal blame it would first begin with the polish person who started destroying property at the airport. Did you ever consider what the police officer at the airport who deployed the tazer may be feeling now since Dziekanski died? No doubt he is going through psychological counselling right now.

You should be ashamed - of yourself for coming to those conclusions.
No offense pisspulper but i don't want to live in a country that turns a blind eye because they are too afraid to go up against the RCMP. Three articles is not enough but you'd never know the feeling unless you lost someone this way. This problem of wrongful deaths should have been dealt with properly many many years ago. Now it's HUGE and other countries are getting involved. I read a post last night on Robert Bagnell's site about a man who lives in Singapore won't dare come here to visit his family anymore. How sad is that? This is Canada. That is whats annoying here.
This one's in poor poor taste but i'm seeing this cartoon depiction. " Officer 1 says to Officer 2, You owe me a G Spot, I got one before you did!!!"
Heidi, I understand your plight and if you remember I AM on your side and with the others who have lost loved ones in the hands of the out of control RCMP. I'm not so much as suggesting that 3 articles is enough, but reacting to the incredible posts by some individuals, refer to Bens' National Shame postings. I hope you are well Heidi, n give your sweetie a squeeze for me.
"... anyone in the world would tell you that is sufficient to put a man down regardless of what sort of state he was in ."

-- well, at least anyone ignorant of what they're talking about. It's so easy to criticize the police from the safety of your computer, knowing you'll never have to deal with a large, violent, incoherent man.
What I find embarassing is this ignorance that people are so ready to expose in public.
On the other hand, ignorant or not, fully informed or not, right or wrong, this kind of episode deserves to have the full light of publicity shone on it.

After all, if the RCMP behaved correctly, what have they to complain about? If they did the right thing, wouldn't an inquiry merely serve to prove that. If their actions are justified, doesn't the world deserve to know that?

I do not approve of hiding things like this. Don't sweep it under the carpet, shine the glare of a spotlight on it.
I know piss I just get all mother bear when Ben gets picked on. I can't put into words what people like him mean to me. Truth at all costs and if he makes a mistake he owns up to it. That's how I feel anyway. :)
It should've been exposed by the people of Canada more so years ago Rap. Now we have other countries exposing it for us. Big pat on the back for the boys there.
Here is something my sister forwarded for me from the Citizen written by Linda Bush

Spot on again Ben.

What happened to the days when a person wanted to be a cop because they liked having a job that was exciting and risky? Here we have 4 large Mounties against one man holding a chair and they taser him... twice? Where was the tough guy among them that handed his partner his 9mm and then tackled the poor guy? Being a cop is by definition a job of risk and danger and not for people that want to feel safe and secure all the time. If you want safe maybe selling insurance is more the job for you. Police, like soldiers, are expected to risk their lives in order to protect others, even a disturbed man holding a chair. Recent history here in Canada, and in America, is showing government that is becoming increasingly despotic in it's attitudes and actions toward it's own people. Wake up people or you're going to find yourselves deeply afraid and intimadated by your own government.

Put your foot down now and insist this behavior be stopped or later you'll be too frightened to protest anything for fear of what your government will do to you.

Ok for future reference, I'd rather be called Mr Pulper(Joking). Also i'm not picking on Ben. If only there weren't so many assinine posts, ok thats another story. Good article, very true of the current employment market, and in all fields due mostly to high turnover. I see this daily, and true again that certainly young officers need more time with an older mentor, or i dare say: a saner one.
Kevin:
Cops should be expected to put their lives on the line. But should they be expected to risk their lives when there is no need to? There was no need to risk the lives of the cops, or to hurt the Polish gentleman more than necessary. The police have a tool that is appropriate in these situations: the taser. It incapacitates the criminal without risking the lives of the police.
lol.. sorry Mr Pulper i'm always in a hurry ;) The keyword you used is "saner". Older means nothing if you were stupid as a kid :)
I understand your point "pisspulper",but being vocal is our only protection as citizens in this country.
If we stop standing up for what we believe in and what we think is right,,we are in a lot of trouble!
The politicans already know we can be lied to and manipulated and they take advantage of that at every opportunity.
Speaking out is the only way to keep them honest!

Taser use is more prolific than ever. A senior with a neurological disorder was tasered in Kelowna.
Most of you folks are missing the point. These cops just moved in and without first assessing the situation. It can be clearly seen that no one was at risk. These cops showed poor judgement as a result of poor training and discipline. Young cop killed on Baffin Island, what the hell was he doing at a remote two man operation. Hazelton here was a young inexperienced cop with an attitude. The four cops killed in Alberta, again inexperience. I could go on but the common denominator here is poor training and discipline.
Can anyone imagine whats going to happen in our society now! every time the RCMP are called (for lets say) a domestic dispute, people are going to be terrified that there going to get tasered and maybe killed.
kevin 1006, your comments are so passe.People do not become police officers because they want a job that's exciting and risky. Police work can sometimes be described as 5 hrs of boredom doing paperwork followed by 5 minutes of sheer terror depending on what happens and what kind of call the police officer has to go to. People become police officers for many the same reasons why they may become doctors or lawyers or firemen/women. Helping people, pay and benefits etc. To suggest that a police officer is going to hand over his gun to another member while he tackles a violent person waving around a chair is simply ludicrious. I believe they call that tombstone courage.
For those who believe that the police actions at YVR with the tasering of Robert Dziekanski were justified or some how warranted boy I pity you. We are close to hitting the bottom of the barrel with these Gestapo tactics. It is time to start bringing some of these Rambo's to justice. S__T that's no good either they will be back on the street to quick. Sorry... forgot this is the Canada. We don't put folks away for gun crimes unless you happen to shoot a few to many ducks by mistake.

“The best political weapon is the weapon of terror. Cruelty commands respect. Men may hate us. But, we don't ask for their love; only for their fear.” Heinrich Himmler
Jonnypg if there is no immediate threat assess the situation first!
Who has been in a fight lately.Do you know how fast you can kill with bare hands.
Despite the medias depiction of this as some poor vistor having a tough day he proved himself violent and was holding a large maybe heavy stapler at the time
I have a heavy stapler on my desk ... in fact two or three ....

Maybe that is why people are afraid to enter my office.....

Watch out for the guy with the stapler ...

;-)

BTW, am I allowed to take a stpler on board a plane????? its a deadly weapon you know.
I know how fast I can kill with bare hands ... not too fast, if at all ....

;-)
"We are close to hitting the bottom of the barrel with these Gestapo tactics."

And we are not even at war. What's the excuse for such tactics during peacetime?

These four burly RCMP officers armed with riot sticks or some chairs could have simply pushed the guy into a corner and pinned him there, to cuff him.

Of course, if they carry 50,000 volt tasers,
why go to all that trouble?

What can possibly go wrong???
"These four burly RCMP officers armed with riot sticks or some chairs could have simply pushed the guy into a corner and pinned him there, to cuff him."

Sure could have, and then after the large, raging man with the stapler brained one of those burly cops, we could have an inquiry as to why their taser wasn't used.
Everyone is so sacred of the taser!!! Did anyone notice that the man continued to fight well after even the second round of electricity was given???? So did the taser kill this guy..or did the police accidentally apply too much pressure to a "RESISTANT" man which ultimately cost him his life. Do you think that the cops intended for this to happen or feel good about what happened. The sad thing is that this story has got more attention then the officer killed in the Baffin Island and the other killed in the NWT. Just of bunch of cop haters out there who love nothing more then to criticize the RCMP over any issue.

Keep hating
I can’t imagine going to Poland as an English speaking person, getting to the airport and spending 10 hours in a place where my “mommy” is obviously not coming to get me, then getting so upset then decide I will begin to break things and act like a complete idiot. I would be scared as hell going to another country and behaving the way the “victim” did in this case. Guess what, you wanted the attention, you got some and unfortunately for everyone involved you died tragically as a result of the behaviours you exhibited. I feel bad for the death as it was clearly an accident, I feel bad for his family and I feel bad for the police officers who have to be scrutinized by people like you guys.
I have to say I am amazed at the comments and the interpretations made by individuals who have watched this video. What it comes down to is this - not all RCMP members are in it for the good of the people, some like the power. If they are young and do not know how to use this power, they are dangerous. What everyone seems to be missing is - this man was not fighting after being tasered, his body was reacting to many volts of electricity. When he was in the midst of dying, none of our trained RCMP officers deemed it important enough to perform CPR, or any other form of lifesaving practises. Instead, one of them could be heard laughing. It is time for accountability, not only within the RCMP, but other parts of our society as well. Many people are to blame for this mans death.
The RCMP were called in to deal with a potentially dangerous situation. The existing security at the Airport were not qualified or willing to deal with the situation. So, out of all of the people at the airport, nobody was able, willing or qualified to deal with the situation. The 4 officers who attended did the best they could with the training, experience or abilities they had. So, what do you want from them? They are just people who happened to choose the RCMP as their choice of occupation. They are not perfect and neither are any of you. Sure they need to be held accountable, but what gives all of you the right to be judge and jury to evaluate their behavior from a 3 minute video? Boy, if it was you, I'm sure you would appreciate an opportunity to present your side of things before you were lynched up. Chester
I watched the video about three times.
From the time the police 4 officers arrived on the scene and spoke the first words to the man which was " How are you sir" I counted 17 seconds before the first taser shot was fired and the man began screaming and fell and rolled on the floor. A second shot was fired about 4 or 5 seconds after that.
After the man was down all the cops pounced on him to subdue him. I distinctly noticed the red haired RCMP officer who was on the left on top of the guy get up and go to the right side of the video. He then picked up what looked like a baton from the floor and grasped it with both hands and drove it hard down into which I would assume was Robert Dziekanski body somewhere in sort of a stabbing motion. It sure did not look like he was knocking the dust off the baton.
He did this three times.
If that is what in fact happened then that was police brutality caught on film.
It then looks like he re-attached his baton to his belt somewhere. Looks like he was getting a few final blows in for good measure.

When all the smoke has cleared it does not matter if the man was an idiot or not. That sort of force was not only totally uncalled for and unjustified and in my opinion but borders on criminal misuse of power and should be dealt with as such. A totally independent inquiry should be held at arms length from law enforcement to see if there are grounds for criminal charges such as criminal negligence causing death.

Pepper spray would have been sufficient. The man was in an enclosed area and no one from the public was in danger. There were 4 burly police officers there to subdue him plus airport security was present.

As for KJM and Raparee, man I hope you don't belong to the RCMP or a provincial police force.

I am not saying that there are not any good law enforcement officers and god knows we need the good ones but for the Rambo's that seems to be surfacing with ever increasing regularity wielding guns, tasers and billy clubs. Fascism went out in the mid 40's. In order to have law and order you need the respect of the general public and that is quickly becoming eroded.
Quaddin, well said, finally someone with a dash of intelligence. KJM, blah blah , never mind, theres not much hope for you.
Quaddin, right on. "In order to have law and order you need the respect of the general public and that is quickly becoming eroded."

Now it's time to resist the usual spin and cover-up and level with the general public.

An apology would be a good start.
"He then picked up what looked like a baton from the floor and grasped it with both hands and drove it hard down into which I would assume was Robert Dziekanski body somewhere in sort of a stabbing motion. It sure did not look like he was knocking the dust off the baton."

- Probably futile to say this, as it's obvious you have your mind made up about what happened, especially with this red-haired cop, but I just thought I'd spoil a bit of the inquiry for you. Here goes. The police baton, or ASP, is a retractible, metal rod. With a sharp snap of the wrist, the rod quickly extends to it's fullest length, then locks. To retract the ASP, the tip of it has to be knocked against a hard object. So while it may seem to you as though the red haired cop were "stabbing" Mr. Dziekanski, he was simply retracting his ASP so he could return it to his belt.

Your whole post shows an abysmal ignorance, and you 'facist' nonsence is simply adolescent posturing.

Hey reparee, don't worry about heidi...she's just transferring all of her frustration over from the st arnaud thing...no father for her kid and all that stuff.....

Ok Ben, this is not your fault. Just a insight into what i mean when i say "stupid postings". Stupid is the polite version of what i'd rather say. For those of who know Heidi and her circumstances, you should all be appalled regardless of your opinion of her. This is absolutely abhorrent commentary, especially the last line. It's no wonder she didn't retort, so i'll help her out. DGDIGGLER you are truly a ****** idiot. Not that you haven't already proven that to most people on 250. What kind of of moron makes a statement like that, albeit not your first time. DG your obviously not mature enough to be posting anything, and yes youv'e proven that also. Be a man and apologize. Otherwise, keep your non-constructive assinine remarks in the back corner of the bat cave you reside.
No Raparee I don't have my mind totally made up. If that is what he is doing with his baton then so be it. I am not a cop like yourself. I know you fella's in the force don't like to have any negative press but from what has been coming down the pipe lately with the recent incidents in Houston, B.C., Vanderhoof, B.C., the recent tasering of an elderly fellow over a traffic ticket and now this episode at YVR your going to receive a lot of it.

"Your whole post shows an abysmal ignorance, and you 'facist' nonsence is simply adolescent posturing."

Sorry if I am not politically correct enough for you!
