Prince George City Council has approved in principle, the  draft of a new bylaw that would prevent  performances that  feature exotic animals.

The list includes everything from snakes to rhinos,  elephants to  orcas and anything else you can imagine.

The bylaw WILL allow dog shows,  rodeos , domestic animal shows ( I.E the PGX fair)  petting zoos and  non profit demonstrations for educational purposes.

Mayor Colin Kinsley  says while he understands  the intent of the  bylaw,  he can’t agree with the  inclusion of elephants  because  in other  cultures elephants are domesticated animals.  "Nothing brought that more  to home than the images from Bangladesh where elephants were moving vehicles out of the ditches, and helping to clear the roads following that cyclone. I just can’t support this bylaw."

Mayor Kinsley was the only  member of Council to oppose approving the draft bylaw in principle.

The bylaw, if passed , will  mean Prince George is  joining the other cities in B.C. which are banning the  type of  circuses that  use exotic animals as part of their  show.

Why are dog shows allowed? Anyone who's seen Best in Show knows what kind of torture that business is (to the dog, but mostly to the humans). Also, what about those poor dogs run off their paws during agility competitions? Just because their tail is wagging doesn't mean they like it.
Hey you feel good people what police dogs, getting killed and injured. Come on lets have a comment on that. Silence nothing but silence.
"Why are dog shows allowed?"

For the same reason that 5 year old humans are allowed to compete in dance events ...

;-)
BTW, the reason both of those are allowed is so that we leave something for the next generation to ban.

;-)
I honestly think PG needs to have a regional zoo that has large inclosures in which an animal that is rescued or recovered could live a good life in. Animals like the couger a few years back.

I think it would be a huge tourist attraction, educational, and a great place for the community as a whole to visit. Limit the animals to the birds and animals of this region; and limit new arrivals to animals that are rescued as abandoned young and such. I can think of a number of great locations within the city where one could be built depending if you wanted it to revitalize an area, or to provide maximum natural interaction for tourism potential.

Time Will Tell....
How about we ban the SPCA...there is a torture chamber if I ever heard of one
They give it a nice feel good name...
"euthanasia"
the end result is the same and a whole lot more of it than any circus ever partook off.
Noone ussualy beats a dog when it doesnt perform. The elephants and tigers are abused if there not in the mood.
I disagree with you vocer.
Dogs are beat if they don't preform. Dogs a lot of the time are beat for being alive. There are many many people out there who will hit anything or anyone. Maybe these are the people who need the help. Violence against animals almost always will lead to violence against people too.

And yet it's OK to massacre animals by the millions to make sausages and choice cuts......

Thank god City Council is protecting us from seeing the humiliation of the pretty animals.

Lets BBQ some steaks to celebrate.....

nitwits
Steaks, but no hot dogs. OK?
no, no dogs,
SPCA might have something to say about that...lol
how about a canary or two?

No doubt in my mind this will get passed.
......Sad......
