Northern Health is making progress on recruitment .

In October, NH had 76 registered nursing vacancies.  That is a two year low due to successful recruitment efforts. There are 74 vacancies for paramedical professionals such as pharmacists and physiotherapists. This is somewhat high, particularly for pharmacy and physiotherapy disciplines which have a great deal of private sector competition. Region wide, Northern Health employs over 7,000 people .

Northern Health Chair Dr. Charles Jago says attracting health professionals depends on several things including developing strong links with educational institutions "To train new staff, aggressively marketing the region to experienced recruits and ensuring we retain people by offering a rewarding work environment. While we have more work to do, our directors are confident that NH is making progress in these areas.”

One of the major underlying problems is that the province is not training enough health care workers. Until such time as the number of newly graduated people matches or exceeds the annual increase in required workers, the problem will continue. Health regions have no mandate to do that, so until the Provincial Government provides more money to post secondary education institutions to take care of the problem, it will continue.
