Prince George, B.C. - Businesses from Quesnel, Ft St James and Prince George are being hit by what Work Safe BC. (WCB) says is a scam.

People are calling on business throughout the region informing employers that they must have a first aide kit or in many cases additional safety equipment costing between $200 and $1500 dollars.

Bruce Clarke, Regional Manager of Work Safe BC says the scam started in the lower mainland and then has moved to this region after complaints were registered.

“We tried getting in touch with the office that these people say they are working out of,it  is in Quebec but of course no one answers:" says Clarke .

If someone approached your business with a pitch for a new safety kit  they say WCB says you must have, call the Work Safe BC office in Prince George at 250- 561-3700

Here is a health and saftey "TOOL KIT" from Alberta Worksafe....

http://employment.alberta.ca/documents/WHS/WHS-PUB_smb001.pdf

And one from Australia ....

I am not quite sure what exactly they were selling. Bandaids, gauze, scissors????

Or "how to" booklets and tool kits?
Tell them you'll pay cash for it when they deliver it in person, then shoot the SOB between the eyes. Until there are REAL consequences for criminal activity, it will continue.
WCB itself is a scam!
Yeah shoot the SOB between the eyes and then you yourself are just a big a scumbag as the ones pulling this scam.

Honestly, if people actually thought before they spoke.....
Nothing happens to scam artists, its not stealing, its just fraud. Personally I think they are both the same.Somehow the law thinks its differant.
Police tend to look the other way even when FRAUD happens in Prince George, so what are they going to do about a scam from back east ?
Shoot the SOB? Shoot him in the back of the head and call it self-defense. Say that he came at you with a loaded first aid kit.
"People are calling on business throughout the region informing employers that they must have a first aide kit ..... "

Depending on the business, that is a true statement.

"... or in many cases additional safety equipment costing between $200 and $1500 dollars"

Again, depending on the business, that is also true.

----------------------
"If someone approached your business with a pitch for a new safety kit they say WCB says you must have, call the Work Safe BC office in Prince George at 250-561-3700"

..... and WCB they will do what? Ask you what business you are in and determine whether you need an emergency response plan and tools such as first aid equipment and even trained people to assist in case of emergency? WorkSafeBC will become very busy very quickly with assessing each situation.

Here is the regulation:

http://www2.worksafebc.com/publications/OHSRegulation/Part3.asp#SectionNumber:3.1

3.1 When program required
(1) An occupational health and safety program as outlined in section 3.3 must be initiated and maintained
(a) by each employer that has
(i) a workforce of 20 or more workers, and
(ii) at least one workplace that is determined to be not low risk under section 3.16 (2) (b), or
(b) by each employer that has a workforce of 50 or more workers.
(1.1) If subsection (1) (a) or (b) applies to the employer, the occupational health and safety program applies to the whole of the employer's operations.
(2) Despite subsection (1) an occupational health and safety program may be required in any workplace when, in the opinion of an officer, such a program is necessary.

Further to that:
3.16 Basic requirements
(1) The employer must provide for each workplace such equipment, supplies, facilities, first aid attendants and services as are adequate and appropriate for
(a) promptly rendering first aid to workers if they suffer an injury at work, and
(b) transporting injured workers to medical treatment.
(2) For the purpose of complying with subsection (1), the employer must conduct an assessment of the circumstances of the workplace, including
(a) the number of workers who may require first aid at any time,
(b) the nature and extent of the risks and hazards in the workplace, including whether or not the workplace as a whole creates a low risk of injury,
(c) the types of injuries likely to occur,
(d) any barriers to first aid being provided to an injured worker, and
(e) the time that may be required to obtain transportation and to transport an injured worker to medical treatment.

And further to that:
(4) First aid equipment, supplies and facilities must be kept clean, dry and ready for use, and be readily accessible at any time a worker works in the workplace.

-------------------------------------
So, as those employers who know the regulations know, the preparedness for rendering first aid depends completely on the size, the location, and the nature of the business.

So, what are the details of the “scam” that make it a scam?
This place is in Surrey. It has level 2 first aid kits selling for $925 ....

is this also part of the scam?

For my take on this, I can only comment on what I read in th paper; appaerntly these hucksters are claiming that the business must have a defibrillator, and they are flogging them at high prices. It is true that a first aid kit is mandatory, the complexity of it is governed by the number of employees, and the type of work the company does i.e. high risk like falling trees, vs. low risk, like driving around in a warm pick up truck spying on contractors and writing them up for thousands in fines. No it has not happened to me!
