Brink Forest Cuts Production .... 35 Jobs Cut
By 250 News
The fall out from the closure of Abitibi-Bowater in Mackenzie is trickling down to Prince George. John Brink of Brink Forest products says he knew it was coming. "That has forced us to cut a shift of 35 people from our operations in Prince George."
"We were getting our trim blocks from Abitibi in Mackenzie, they will no longer be available and with a glut in the market we had no alternative. When we lost the block in Houston that cost our company 60 jobs and we have been able to get trim blocks from Canfor in Houston on a temporary basis."
Brink says the worst is not over for B.C.'s Forestry industry, "The Central interior of BC produces one half of the total market for wood export in Canada . Canada had been exporting 10 billion board feet , but we ramped up production because of the beetle and we had exports of 14 to 15 billion board feet going into a market that was glutted with wood because of the reduction in US housing and the over supply. Until we match supply to demand, we will see yet more bleeding in the industry” .
