Police vehicles, flashing lights all mark the  start of the  Counterattack program

Prince George, B.C. - The season for celebrating has arrived, and so has the Counterattack program.

This morning at the ICBC Claims Centre in Prince George, the RCMP, ICBC, and local politicians were on hand for the official start of the Counterattack program for the ’07 – 08 holiday season.

The progam was launched  with  mock up road side  spot check.

Before Counterattack was launched 30 years ago, B.C. had the highest number of alcohol related traffic crashes n the country.  In 1976, drunk drivers caused more than 300 deaths on B.C. roads.

Today, the provincial population may have increased but the number of alcohol related deaths has been cut in half.  In the North Central region, there were 600 alcohol related crashes in 2005 (the latest year for which there are statistics).  There were 400 injuries and 27 deaths that year,   nine more deaths than in 2004.

Sergeant Guy Tremblay  RCMP North Central Traffic Services says they are making progress “The Traffic Services Strategies that have been put in place since 2002 have been working. We have moved our five year fatal alcohol collisions downward from 48% to about 30% and will continue with the  intention of reducing these alcohol related fatals even further.”

Expect to see roadblock check stops now through to  January 1st of 2008.
