On this day in 1989 a young man walked into Montreal’s École Polytechnique and for 45 minutes, roamed the halls, and shot to death 14 women.
25 year old Marc Lepine shouted that he hated feminists before opening fire on the female students in a classroom.
The rampage has become known as the Montreal Massacre, and it has become catalyst for efforts to stop all violence against women.
Today, there will be a special memorial at the UNBC Wintergarden. It starts at 11:30 and for two hours, there will be speakers, poets and musicians. The memorial will be followed by a reception at the Northern Women’s Centre.
