The Developers Of Friendship Lodge Sure Were Perceptive: One Man's Opinion
By Ben Meisner
There must be some people out there, developers, homeowners and business people alike, who are wondering how they can speed up the process at City Hall, so they can have their respective developments okayed in the same fashion as the Golf Club and the BC housing’s new home for the homeless.
In the case of the new facility on Queensway, BC Housing must be terribly perceptive. First they buy the property with no conditions, then knock down the building , then apply for a rezoning after they have done all that and then when that rezoning does come …Surprise... Within two days they have already selected a general contractor and are seeking a development permit in late January or February.
For you who may be trying to get such a project underway, may I suggest talking to Vanmar Constructors; they are building the new building. A bid process to see just what the price will be that you as a taxpayer will pay , don’t be silly we didn’t have that process.
Now if you wonder why the people of Millar aAdition are just a tad peeved, it might be found in how the process unfolded. Oh they where told they would have input and all that , but you get the distinct impression from watching what took place that this deal was a forgone conclusion , or, as I have said before , the developers are awfully perceptive.
Meantime over at the Golf course, they are going to get a hearing for rezoning the property they are seeking up off the North Nechako Road. Have they sold the property that they now occupy? No. Have they paid taxes on the green section of the course that they at present occupy? No.
Do they have money to develop a new golf course? What do the citizens in the city receive for those forgotten taxes? No to the first question and we don’t know to the second. City Hall hasn’t even bothered to tell us to this point if they have asked.
If you were a developer or someone interested in coming to this city and you have been reading this site over the past few weeks, you might be wondering, are there two different sets of rules?
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.
