Province Still Helping In Flood

The Province is supporting the City of Prince George as an ice jam on the Nechako River continues to impact the community. The Province will continue working closely with local officials to ensure all resource requests continue to be met as quickly as possible. At present, Provincial assets assisting the city's efforts include:

*Two ice experts and provincial flood hazard specialists for hydrological expertise.

*The coordination of supply and shipment of high-volume pumps and large capacity discharge pipes to help drain water back to the river.

*The Province pre-positioned gabion diking baskets for deployment by the City of Prince George. As of yesterday, 1.4 km has been deployed.
- another 1.3 kms will be installed today;
- an additional 3.2 kms are available to the community.

*The Province has provided sandbags and sand. There are 8 wildland firefighters from Ministry of Forests and Range Protection Branch and inmates from the Prince
George Regional Correction assisting with filling sandbags.

The Northeast Provincial Regional Emergency Coordination Centre (PREOC) in Prince George remains activated to coordinate support to the local government.

There are 21 provincial staff from various ministries within the PREOC or assisting the local government at site. This includes: emergency management, water management experts, and public information officers.

Through the provincially-funded Emergency Social Services (ESS) program, the Province is providing for the food and housing needs of those evacuated and requiring assistance. ESS is on standby to help if more evacuations are ordered.

Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, John Les, has approved provincial disaster financial assistance for eligible damages as a result of the
flooding. Eligible claimants can begin applying once the emergency has passed and recovery efforts begin.
