The Written Word: Rafe Mair December 19th

The Brian Mulroney/Karlheinz Schrieber saga has sullied the office of Prime Minister and ensured that Brian Mulroney’s reputation is in tatters. Quite apart from all else, a Prime Minister even out of office doesn’t take bags of cash from a crook – or anyone else for that matter.
After a speech I recently gave I responded to a question by simply stating that this was a falling out of thieves. When I heard Mulroney calling Schreiber the world’s worst liar I was forced to think that this would be far too great a coincidence.
There is one very important issue that hasn’t been canvassed. If this $225,000 or $300,000 was for legal work, did Mulroney apprise his law firm, Ogilvie and company with which he’s a partner? If he didn’t, that’s a serious breach of trust. Did he then do the work as an independent lawyer? If so, he’s obliged to put into a trust account and draw from it only as he did work. From his testimony, there was no written evidence of what he was going to do for Schreiber and how he was going to be able to bill. No evidence of an agreement – no receipt for these large sums of cash.
We also seem to have forgotten that on the face of it Mulroney lied under oath when he claimed and got $2.1 from us the taxpayers.
Most of all, Brian Mulroney has sullied the high office of Prime Minister and confirmed the accuracy of his nickname, Lyin’ Brian.

Since the public and the committee have not been presented with a full account of what happened there are many more questions to be asked and explanations to be had and one may come to the conclusion that sayings like the ones above may indeed be applicable to the events in question.
Then there is the distinct possibility that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
