Prince George, B.C. -  The Nechako River  has  risen  another 2 feet,  aboat half way up the  height of the gabion dikes that have been installed along River Road.

"Certainly people are concerned" says  City Clerk and Information officer Don Schaeffer, "There  is  also concern at Delhaven where the water levels have risen"

The residents of that condominium  development   had been evacuated  last week, but were recently allowed to return to their homes.  They do however, remain on evacuation alert.

Along River Road, the area hit hardest by the recent ice jam flood,  storm drains at Lakeland Mills are backing up "Extra pumps  have been depoyed to that area" says Schaeffer.

So far, the Nechako River has not breached any of the diking  that has been installed,  nor has it  posed  any threat to the  earth berm that was installed  at  McAloney Road.

Ths morning, civic politicians  are taking a tour of the  regions  hit by the flooding .

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Stop building in a well known and frequently flooded area.

End of the problem !
"stop building"?? What about the buildings that have been built for 30+years? Let's just bulldoze them down and make them relocate-end of problem.

Why not use common sense and dredge the river to get rid of the silt etc. that is contributing to the problem.
It is a flood plain. When planning they talk about the chances of flooding in a 200 year range and that whole area is within that region. Nothing of high value should have ever been built in that area.

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wsd/data_searches/fpm/index.html

Has more information about that sort of planning.

Now granted the railway has been around for a long time but ever since the 60's there was lots of data about the flooding in the area and no one should have been building in that area.
Time to move the industry out, stop building the bridge, access the CN intermodal facility from First Avenue or the eastern-most end of River Rd., build up the rest of the ares over time with fill and create parkland from it until such time that the City grows again and a planned urban development can be created there for more appropriate uses than heavy industry.

Use some of the millions available from beetle money to build a heavy industry park outside of the bowl air shed. After all the expected flooding frequency can, for a good part of it, be blamed on the MPB epidemic, so that would be a very legitimate use of those dollars.

We could also film that whole process and promote it to industry in North America, who might be interested in relocating in this City of the futures.....

Let's milk this for what it is worth whiel we can. None of this little million here and two million there to raise a road or build some dikes. That's small town band aid thinking.
I agree with Owl about the industrial park funding, but the problem is our city is run by those under the 200 year flood plane and they would like to see a revitalized downtown rebuilt under the high water mark... so that will likely be the focus.

The end result being that nobody in their right mind would want to invest in this city as per its zoning and municiple planning.
red2b,

all rivers can fllod, and this one always has, and always will.
Theriver was tere long before tyhe homes and businesses.
I am sorry but i lack much sympathy for people who build in a know trouble area.
