Three More Crashes On Area Highways

Police are asking people to slow down in the wake of three accidents within a few hours in and around the city.

The first crash happened at 10.20 am, a multi vehicle crash, 15 minutes south of Prince George on highway 97. Three vehicles involved ,no one seriously injured.

The second crash came at 11.51 this morning on the Hart Highway within the city limits on highway 97. In this case a witness says one vehicle rear ended the other. Police are still investigating. No ,life threatening injuries.

A roll over on highway 16 west , near the welcome to Prince George sign resulted in major damage but the two occupants in the vehicle did not receive any injuries and declined medical attention.

Staff Sergeant Doug Aird says the roads have been slippery and people are continuing to drive as though they are not. Aird says, “Slow down “.

No visible sanding on the Hart at that time.

Going to town we met the YRB sand truck at 12:20 pm racing past the Mohawk station blasting sand/soil & going full tilt north to the scene which was being attended to by police and fire crews.

"Slow down." But some sanding BEFORE the crashes may prevent some of them.

(Why do they always sand after the fact - Murphy's Law?).
Is this worse than previous years?

If so, is weather worse than other years?

Is maintenance worse than other years?

Are drivers not as careful as they used to be?

Are automatic gizmos on cars making matters worse?
IMO privatizing the management of highways maintenance was a big mistake. I think it should still be a crown responsibility so that we have more direct accountability for the allocation of resources for the safety of our highways.

I am all for having individuals and company contractors that sub contract the work from the highways department on an on call and contract basis, but the facts are that the management of the service should be a crown responsibility or we will pay for this in lives and costs passed on to ICBC among others.

Facts are that the current system was devised to enrich the ownership group at the expense of their service and the employees that work for them. The motivations for the company and the public at large are in conflict with this current boondoogle of an approach to privatized highway maintenance.
I think it is time drivers start taking a little of the responsibility here as well.

So the roads aren't sanded, slow down...sheesh...snow and ice and winter means roads could be slippery, common sense people.
Get up 10 minutes earlier...one less coffee, and leave sooner...

And before someone takes off and has a fit, no not every driver is bad, but there are enough of them that we need to do something for ourselves.
What has happened is our climate has changed such that the typical rules that were followed in the past for when to plow, sand, etc. no longer apply. So the contractor only does what is the bare minimum to get paid and lately that just doesn't match up with the road conditions we experience.

The whole reason why the cops keep charging people for driving too fast for the road conditions is then they get a percentage of the fine and then ICBC also has a reason to charge you more for your renewal. You could be going 5 km/h and be in an accident and you will get charged. They have lost touch with reality. What should be happening is an improvement in road maintenance and not less like it is now.

That statement pretty much says it all.

As for Murphy's Law, the sand truck does seem to be the first one to the scene of an accident. Road maintenance could definitely be better.
