Prince George, B.C. - The costs to battle, and mitigate the flooding caused by the ice jam on the Nechako River, has now topped the million dollar mark, with latest estimates in at $1,080. 800. That figure doesn't include the damages caused by the flood waters to businesses and homes.
The jam continues to grow. By 9 this morning, it was 7.5 km long, just one kilometer away from the Foothills Bridge.
Flood preparation information was delivered to residents of the Morning Place area yesterday in anticipation of continuing seasonable cold weather. Such weather encourages ice flowing from upstream to join the head of the jam.
In response to rising water levels near the Delhaven subdivision, City crews are extending the gabion diking another 150 metres to encompass the length of the riverfront in that area, and a further 10 pallets of sandbags are being delivered to that area.
Water levels dropped further downstream in the Cottonwood Island Park and River Road areas.
