Prince George, B.C. - The ice jam on the Nechako Rriver has now expanded to 8.5 kms from the confluence . The jam extends to the area west of the Foothills Bridge near the Riverview Road area.
City Crews have installed markers on property on Morning Place and North Nechako Road to see if water levels will rise. Homes on Morning Place experienced high water levels during the ice jam and flooding in 1996. Residents on the south side of Morning Place and one home further west on North Nechako road have been given flood preparation information.
Meantime, water levels downstream of the head of the jam have dropped an average of .3 of a metre since the most recent measurements were taken Friday. The most significant drop was noted in the Cottonwood Island Park area, where water levels in the Nechako are no longer high enough to allow water to reach the side channel that had been open for the past week.
Along the River Road area, crews continue to haul debris, and some of the gabion dikes may be relocated. Pumps are still in place in the McAloney Crescent area, but the pumps are only operating intermittently, pumps on Pulp Mill Road have stopped pumping, but are being manned in case ground water levels should rise, and at the Delhaven Pozer Road area, pumping of ground water continues.
