Jam Compressed to 5kms

Prince George, B.C. – The ice jam on the Nechako River in Prince George has now compressed to 5 kms in length, another shift in ice caused a surge of water and more flooding of the PWB Shipping and Receiving area as well as in the McAloney Road area.
“Crews will be installing locking concrete blocks on the earth berm in the Ongman-McAloney Road area” says City spokesman Kevin Brown, “That will give another metre of protection.”
The surge in water also meant increased water in the River Road area, so sandbags will be added to the top of the gabion dikes in that area.
The evacuation alerts remain in place and percolating water has been witnessed on the south side of First Avenue.
At the Del Haven condo complex, high powered vacuum trucks will be on site today to start removing as much water as possible from those residences.
The City will also be closing off access to the Cameron Street Bridge from the north side “There is evidence people have been wandering out on to the ice from that location” says Brown, “So access will be blocked. The trails through Cottonwood Island Park will also be blocked as there is a safety issue.”
The installation of gabion dikes is expected to be completed today in the Morning Place area.
