Mayor Kinsley Has A Job Shadow: One Man's Opinion

By Ben Meisner

2008 is a civic election year.
Will Mayor Colin Kinsley run again? Never say never, but with increasing frequency we are seeing his job shadow, Don Zurowski, appearing at the same venues. That indicates that Zurowski will run and that Kinsley is not at all sure that he will.
Was there a deal made before the last election that if Dan Rogers and Zurowski both didn’t seek the Mayor's chair one of them would receive the nod from the Mayor?  Very likely.
Rogers caused Kinsley to go out and raise a bunch of money to make his campaign effective and he was able to convince the electors that he was better than Rogers because he did not sit on the fence and he supported the construction of a new Cameron St bridge.
Well we didn’t get the bridge in spite of the Hart voting in favour of Kinsley and he had a very effective campaign manager in Kevin Brown, who owns a PR company getting him the nod. Brown worked hard and you may notice during the ice jams he has been the PR spokesman for the city.
Now how would a race between Zurowski and Rogers shape up?  In my mind both are able to sit on both sides of the fence with the picket somewhere in the center.
Zurowski has this Yeh, Yeh syndrome, everything is perfect, and that line of "the glass is half full or half empty" leaves me not wanting to use a glass anymore. He is a champion of the idea that we have become diversified in Prince George and the forest industry is just a small player. Those rose coloured glasses evidently can’t see out as far as Mackenzie, Ft St James, McBride and Quesnel. We may have seen 1500 jobs disappear but then, we don’t have to worry ,we are diversified and those workers didn’t really spend their money in PG anyway.
So what’s in the wind locally? Give it a couple of months.  If the US housing market stays in the toilet, which it will , then its only  a matter of time before more communities will find  that the glass is empty .
Are the voters looking around for someone not attached to the present City Council?  You bet!  There has been plenty of talk that a new fresh face, someone who doesn't carry all the old baggage is in order.  Now whether someone will step up to the plate is another matter.
Oh there is one dark horse ,did I forget to mention Glen “Moose” Scott?  He says he is considering running fore the mayors chair …. Really.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion

God help us all if any of these deadbeats win. No new ideas but the status quo will ensure our towns march to mediocrity. Where are all the dynamic forward thinkers gone to in this town? Vancouver? We need help. By the way how is the new city manager working out?
I think Kevin Brown should thow his hat in.
By the way how is the new city manager working out?

The Mare has the new manager in his back pocket Its more of the some old same old. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

Ben has Zurowski well peged with his rose coloured glasses.

Cheers
Hey Ben,

Has Elaine ever considered running for council?
I think I will reserve my spot at the 5th floor counter in City Hall at the deadline hour for filing the papers to participate for the mayor's race. Who will be there from the current council with papers ready for Council and for Mayor, and deciding at the last moment based on who is filing for what, which one they will file.

I think Bruce Strachan should run. He is getting better and better in the opinions he is bringing forward in his column. Today’s was imply excellent!!! Spoke about what Williston and WAC Bennett would do if they were here in 2008, based on what they did 50 or so years ago: Hydro developments, wood based pharmaceuticals (gee, where have I heard pharmaceuticals before???), top quality paper products, world class manufactured building systems, cluster research facilities at UNBC.

At least he is heading in the right direction - realizing we have a "problem" and realizing we have to tackle it in a "big" way with some government leadership. I am with Bruce, I see no leadership from the province, the feds, and this city.

So who, in this City, would make the best mayor we've ever had? Who has the business sense? Who has the social sense? Who has been effective in getting projects/programs off the ground?
The new City Manager is unobtrusive. If he has made any moves, they have been pretty darn quite moves.

His first year on the job is over. I think it is time for the Citizens in this community to participate in an evaluation.
"...wood based pharmaceuticals (gee, where have I heard pharmaceuticals before???),..."

Google *tall oil* for info.
If the "dark horse" does run fer mayor, I suggest he brush up on how percentages are determined. If property taxes go up too much, I see a lot of changes at city hall too.
Strachan would be an interesting candidate. I can't say as though I would support Zurowski or Rogers. They seem too reserved and cautious for what we'll need in the short-term IMHO. I think both are intelligent guys, but I'm looking for a "leader" for mayor, someone who has definite positions, is decisive and who wants to take PG in a different direction that what we have seen in recent years. To be honest, I don't think there is anyone currently on council who fits what I'm looking for in a mayor.
Anyone ever thought of Bill Lynch? Successful businessman, basically retired, in touch with our community, respected and well known, has leadership skills, character, integrity and sound values. But is he interested? Anybody thought to ask him? Chester
IMO Rogers is a safe bet if all else fails and it becomes between him and the current mayor or others on council.

Bill Lynch would be an interesting prospect, but his ideas around real estate would most definitely have to be clearly defined (for his best interest) to avoid the look of a conflict of interest in city planning, which would be one of his most important tasks as mayor. I think its more likely his son-in-law (more electable) would run... rather then Bill himself.

I like the idea of a Brock McLroy (spl) kind of free enterprise candidate for this a town that is overly dependent on the multinational corporate based economy. He's got good outspoken ideas at the various public forums and past experience bringing projects to PG like the Yellowhead Bridge infrastructure project (Ritchie Bros to 1st Ave), which is the kind of projects (fed and provincial funded) PG needs to be looking at for future transportation and industrial development. I think with a good management staff working for him (at city hall) he'd make a very good candidate that would represent the people of PG very well. I don't think he would have the financial support for a campaign though.

Peter Ewert is also another person with genuine concerns for the entire community that should receive consideration IMO.
"Anyone ever thought of Bill Lynch? Successful businessman, basically retired, in touch with our community, respected and well known, has leadership skills, character, integrity and sound values."

I aggree very much so. So why would someone like that be interested in ruining a great record? One does not have to be mayor or a Councillor to lead the city in the directions one feels it should be going. In matter of fact, I tend to think that being on Council prevents one from doing that.
Brock???? .... God Lord man!!!!!!! That would most definitely put this place inot Hicksville territory ......

Let him get his wings in Hixon or someplace first. I mean, that one really takes the cake.

If you want the City Manager to run the City politically as well, then make the City Manager mayor instead of putting a puppet in place..

"Peter Ewert is also another person with genuine concerns for the entire community that should receive consideration"

Let's see .... how many people can we list that have genuine concerns for the entire community????

That is the easy part and will generate a list of thousands.

Now, cull the list for those who have leadership qualities ......

And then cull the list once more for thsoe who are electable ......

I am sorry. Peter would not end up on my final list.

Whatever happened to his stand up for the North campaign?

A leader must not only have an idea. A leader needs to be able to

1. know that the idea is saleable;

2. sell the idea;

3. follow through to the end,

4. have an exit strategy which might include such a simple thing as getting back to the community of interest and being able to say: "Folks, I tried. It did not work. Time to move on. It's been a slice"
Been reading all posts for some time now.
Decided its time to say my part

I'm holding my vote for Eugene Fetterly. No Fetterly, no vote.
