Ice Jam Could Be Problem Till Spring

Prince George, B.C. - The ice jam that has  caused flooding and evacuations of homes and businesses in Prince George, could be with this city until the spring.  "The  ice experts are telling me it will take prolonged  double digit temperatures to melt this jam" says City spokesman Kevin Brown " They say it is possible this situation will be with  us until the spring."

That is not comforting news to the residents  who have been forced from their homes. A further 47 homes are under evacuation alert, as are 47 businesses.

New frazzle ice continues to make its way downstream  and has  extended the jam to  just under 6kms  over the past 24 hours.

Gabion diking has been  installed  at Morning Place, and residents along Sunset Place have been given flood information.

2500  sandbags  are being put in place on top of the gabion diking along River Road.  It is hoped the extra sandbags wil   give that area extra proetection from the ice and  water should the jam shift and create  new surges of water as  happened on New Year's Eve, causing more flooding in the River Road area.

I guess the City has run out of new news ..... the fact that this thing will likely be with us till spring has been stated before and has been reported on here before.

So what else is new? The jam will move up and down the river over time; water will be prevented from flowing through in sufficient quantities at different locations as time moves on, the weather changes, etc. As a result place that were dry one day will be wet again a few days later. It is the nature of the beast.

from December 16, 2007 ...

"There is no telling when the icejam on the Nechako river will disappear and along with it, the state of emergency and evacuation orders. In fact, there is every possibility this jam, flood, issue could be with us till spring."

"At a media briefing today, ice jam expert Paul Doyle of Doyle Engineering says even if the current jam dissipates, we can expect a repeat performance "
I still get a laugh out of the term "Ice Expert" (Cold + Water = ICE) (Ice + Shalow River = Ice Jam) Now where is my PhD?
well now northman.......it is witheld due to spelling problems..... :-) (Shalow river? ) I know..probably not spelling but typing.....but how could I resist the rib?? :-)
Speaking of typing, does anyone notice that it is almost impossible to type fast on this site. I sometimes have to hit the same keys, over and over. I thought it might be my keyboard, but it only happens on this site.

Any comments???
ahh you got me skabowl1, Hukt On Foniks Wurkt Fur Me.
I have not noticed that Palopu. What happens to me, however, is that the site crashes my browser window every now and then.

So, unless it is a short note (and how many of mine are short notes ... LOL) I create the post in a word processor first.

For those who pick out typos, they will notice my tendency to transpose letter in such words as "what" which are more often typed out as "waht" when I type quickly ....
It is balmy out tonight with 40 km/h wind gusts, so

1. expect more movement and more frazzle from up river ....

2. ice will shift and close off some previously developed passages, raising some water levels on either the north or south sides, or both ....

3. new passages will open up and allow some water in areas previously flooded to drop on either the north or south sides .....

4. the outlook is the same for the next couple of days, with a minor cooling trend beginning Monday .....

5. once the cooling trend sets in, expect a bit more consolidation with shifting to be less frequent .....

6. the long range outlook is for a return to warmer temps by the following weekend ... with a return to more frequent shifting.

7. the water is expected to continue to flow and seek out low spots to the best of its abilities, except where it is blocked by ice ...
