Prince George, B.C. - Tomorrow, Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley will  preface the first City Council meeting of the year by  celebrating the City being named the  Forest Capital of B.C. for 2008, it is a title the City will share with the Lheidli T'enneh.

The City and First Nations  submitted a joint entry  for the honour to the  Association of BC Forest Professionals

The Association's panel of judges  was impressed by the slate of activities, which plans to touch all parts of the community, and its strong volunteer team.

In announcing the award, the Association said "While the area surrounding Prince George and Lheidli T’enneh has been hard hit by the mountain pine beetle, the communities have rallied, replanted their parks and have chosen to make the best of a bad situation. In spite of the devastation they are facing, Prince George and Lheidli T’ennah remain forestry based communities with many jobs depending on the forestry companies based in the area.

"Prince George and Lheidli T’enneh’s application stood out from the other excellent applications because of the broad base of community support they received for their bid and the diverse range of activities they have planned to celebrate their connection to our forests," said Amanda Brittain, the ABCFP’s director of communications.

The calendar of events includes many activities that will appeal to the whole family. Activities include celebrations such as Earth Day and National Forest Week as well as educational events such as a lecture series and mill tours. In addition, the organizing committee has decided to highlight the forests in each of the different seasons with a dedicated Forest Capital event designed to appeal to all members of the community.

Excellent!! Congrats PG!! Although "Mountain Pine Beetle Capital Of The WORLD" seems to have a better ring to it!
"the communities have rallied, replanted their parks and chosen to make the best of a bad situation" ??
They have?
Did I miss something here?
We dont all livein adream world.
Cheers
Yipee.
andi.
rainbow park is better now than before the b.k.
To know your parks you gotta visit them....often.
I have seen Rainbow Park Runner46 and they did a good job, but I think many people are missing the point.
We get a lot of spin on the MPB issue and a lot of denial by government and foresters alike.
In fact,it is about the the worst disaster to hit the forest industry in recent memory,if ever, and it is just warming up.
Prince George has a large enough economic base to likely survive it, but many smaller communities will not.
I fail to see how handing out awards for planting trees will help make people aware of what is really happening.
That plays into the spin and rhetoric and we have had enough of that.
Pretending that all is well with the Mountian Pine Beetle devastation is not going to help anyone.
Only the finding of solutions and education will do that, and so far, that's just not happening fast enough!
Happy New Year!
Right on the money Andyfreeze! I also find it ironic that PG is named the forest capital when a majority of thier logging is done in neighboring forest districts!
